Kenzie walked off the bus and her attention went over to an empty parking lot that hadn't been parked in for almost a week. It was Asher's spot, it wasn't marked or labeled but everyone at the school knew it was his.
She tried to hide the fact that she was disappointed, she had hoped that he would show up. He had been gone for a week and she hadn't seen him since the night they were supposed to go to a movie. He wouldn't even answer her calls or text messages.
Even worse than not answering her calls, he wouldn't come to the door when she visited. On Thursday, she had went over to his house to see what was wrong with him. When she knocked on the door his younger brother Blake answered the door.
When she asked to come in and talk to Asher he answered "He told me to tell you he was at work". When she asked if he was there when he was supposed to be in school, Blake got a nervous look for a second before saying "He is out of town".
Did they think Kenzie was stupid? He was at work but was out of town at the same time? She didn't believe either of the answers. She was going to figure out what was going on with Asher, one way or another.
Like the other days in the week of Asher's absence the morning went exactly the same. It was as boring that day as it was every other day since Asher was gone and Kyndall was on her trip with the key club.
Kenzie walked out of gym class ready to get the day over with. School was the last thing on her mind. She couldn't help but wonder what Asher was up to or if they would still be together after everything that had happened. She walked to her locker to put books away and grab her lunch.
Asher pulled up to the school, after skipping a whole week his mom forced him to go. If he didn't go he was going to be kicked out and his car would be taken away, neither of which sounded good to him. He looked back at his parking spot still surprised that no one had parked in the best spot since he had been missing for a week.
Not wanting to run into Kenzie he arrived when most people were in class. It seemed smart since Kenzie was always in class on time and never left early, normally she even stayed longer than she had to. He walked to his locker and grabbed his books.
Kenzie closed her locker quietly before walking down the hall. She hadn't left class early by choice, her teacher sent her out after she had completed all her work. As she rounded the corner she saw what she had been waiting for all week.
Her eyes scanned over the familiar figure. She looked at the messy brown hair that she loved running her hands through when they sat on the couch or in his car. The Letterman Jacket that had no patches on it except for Auto tech and "Ash" written on the back in cursive. The Grease stained Jeans paired with Bright white Nike shoes. She smiled as she looked at him, her worry was gone since he was here with her.
"Asher!" she yelled rushing over towards him a huge smile on her face.
Asher cringed at the sound of Kenzie saying his name. The one person he didn't want to see or hurt knew he was there and was coming over towards him. He slowly turned to look at her but didn't say anything or smile. He felt bad about what he did and felt bad for what he had to tell her.
Kenzie wrapped her arms around Asher's neck and smiled as she looked up at him. "Hey, your back. How was your trip?" she asked jokingly still smiling.
She looked down at his arms which were still at his side which were normally around her waist by now. Trying to ignore that she looked up at him, only to get another shock. He wasn't smiling, in fact he seemed like he was in pain.
"Asher whats wrong?" She asked confused by the way he was acting.
Asher took her arms from around his neck and stepped back "Kenzie I can't" he said looking at her thinking about walking away.
"You can't what?" She asked confused and hurt.
"I can't be with you" He said shaking his head. He didn't want to tell her that but he had been thinking about what her mom had said.
"What do you mean?" she asked as tears started to form.
"Kenzie" he said then paused "We can't be together" he said shaking his head and taking another step back.
"Of course we can" she said shaking her head and taking two steps forward so that they were close again.
"We can't though Kenzie" He said looking down at her. He felt horrible about everything that was happening.
"Asher, I love you" She said then wrapped her arms around him and burying her face in his chest.
Asher unwrapped her arms and stepped back again "I love you too, but Kenzie it won't work. I can't risk it" he said shaking his head not wanting to tell her what her mom had said.
Kenzie looked up at him as tears still ran down her cheeks "Risk what?" She asked hurt.
Asher looked at her then at the locker "I have to many responsibilities. I don't have time to hangout with you anymore. I need to work or it will be harder on both of us" he said shaking his head.
"You do work" She said not understanding why he was talking like that.
"Things could get complicated if we keep this going Kenzie" he said shaking his head and turning to walk away.
Kenzie stood and thought of where he might have gotten the idea. When he said Complicated she knew exactly where the thought of it not working had come from. "Your listening to her?!" She said looking at him.
Asher looked back at her "This time she has a pretty good argument" he said not telling her that she had threatened to get him arrested.
"What did she tell you to do?" She said wanting to know what her crazy control freak of a mom had said to him.
"She just told me to stay away from you and Carson. Stay away from her family!" he said looking at her.
"She didn't!" Kenzie said furious. "You have more right to see us than she does, and she doesn't even spend time with us!" she said shaking her head the tears changing from sadness to anger.
Asher didn't say anything, he felt horrible for ending things with Kenzie but he had to work and being in jail wouldn't help anyone. He waved to her then walked out a exit door that lead outside.
Kenzie kicked the locker closest to her and stormed out the front door of the school. She needed to get some air and couldn't stay in a class with people who no problems at all, while her whole world was crumbling around her.
She started to walk in random directions since she didn't have a car and no school bus was around. Hours past faster than she had ever expected. Around four she walked into her house and dismissed the nanny that took care of Carson while everyone in the house was at work and school.
