Ladybug slid down the sidewalk, using her yo-yo to narrowly missing a laser shot her way.
Rolling to her feet, she took in the villain she was up against. The thin woman was dressed in bright purple, lasers attached to her wrists. Passerby screamed as her laser hit and froze a young man running in terror.
The woman cackled towards the sky, screaming out, "Freeze! It's Zapinator, and I think it's high time we all slowed down!"
Ladybug wasted no time, swinging down and knocking the Zapinator off her feet. The woman was up in no time, anger written all over her face. Dodging lasers with her yo-yo, she saw Chat Noir sneak up behind her and swipe her legs out from underneath her.
The Zapinator went down firing lasers, and Chat began scaling the wall. He grabbed onto a windowsill, just as her laser connected with it. The cat went down like a rock, landing painfully on the sidewalk and not stirring.
"Chat Noir!" Ladybug screamed out to the empty space between them, wanting more than anything to abandon her job and run to him.
They had made a pact a long time ago to always stay focused on the job at hand, no matter what happened. Chat had been reluctant at first, but Ladybug had made him swear to it.
The longer he laid lifeless, the more she was now regretting the promise she'd made. Hey, it was just a pinky swear, and while sacred, it was alright to break those, right?
She began running to him, but was cut off by the Zapinator, who clearly didn't care about his state.
"I'm afraid your boyfriend is going to be helpless a little while longer." The woman sent another laser her way.
Ladybug didn't bother to correct her terminology, instead shouting, "Lucky Charm!"
In seconds, a pair of handcuffs appeared. Ladybug used her yo-yo to wrap up the Zapinator and had her cuffed in a record time. She then snapped the woman's headband, releasing the akuma.
Ladybug made quick work of cleansing the butterfly, before rushing to help Chat Noir.
"Chat! Chat!" She held his shoulders, shaking him violently. "Please, please, please, wake up, come on, wake up!"
The cat stirred, and Ladybug felt an enormous weight being lifted off of her shoulders.
"Thank goodness!" Ladybug said, making sure he was alright.
Chat Noir rubbed his head, a smirk teasing the corners of his lips. "Somebody missed me." He said halfheartedly.
Ladybug pulled him forcefully into a hug, taking both of them by surprise. They stayed there for a few seconds, soaking each other in.
"Ladybug, I--" Chat Noir was interrupted by the beep of her miraculous.
"Hey, I've got to go. I-I hope you're okay."
Ladybug sprinted off, turning at the last moment. "Chat?"
He looked up, curious. "What?"
"Never do that again." She then scampered off, leaving Chat alone with his thoughts.
He rose to his feet slowly. She was so stunning. Even though she pretended to be annoyed by his teasing, he knew there was some small part of her that cared about him. Now, whether she cared for his as a friend or more, that was the question of the hour.
Chat shook his head to clear his thoughts. He better get back before the group at the bakery got suspicious. Ducking behind a bush, his power faded away in a flash of green and he casually walked out as Adrien.
Adrien rushed into the bakery in mock alarm, running over to the table where his friends were sitting.
"Thank goodness you guys are alright!"
"Hey man, where have you been?" Nino turned to his best friend, curiousity all over his dark skin.
"I ran out to find help and was zapped by that crazy lady." Adrien sat down. "What did I miss?"
"Me too," Marinette said, nodding. "I couldn't move for a while, it was terrifying."
Alya sighed. "You two have all the fun. Nino and I just sat in the pantry waiting for the all clear signal."
Nino checked the time. "I better go. It's my turn to cook dinner."
Alya nodded. "I'm heading out too; I'll walk home with you alright?"
Nino nodded and Marinette smiled inwardly, she had always found them the cutest couple.
"I can stay a little while longer, if that's alright with you Marinette?"
Marinette's stomach flipped, and she nodded. "Sure, the bakery doesn't close until I say it does."
Adrien gave a light laugh, and Alya gave her a thumbs up as she and Nino left the bakery.
"So, are you staying after school tomorrow to help plan the Valentine's dance?"
Marinette nodded. "Yes, are you?"
Adrien gave a weak smile and nodded. "Actually yes, cre paper streamers and school dances aren't really up my alley, but Nino wanted to be close to Alya and practically begged me to come with him."
"That's nice of you. So he does like Alya?" Marinette took a sip of tea and smiled. "Because I think they would be the cutest couple."
"Definetly. And agreed. We should totally set them up for the dance!"
Marinette laughed. "Wow, you're a bigger matchmaker than me!"
Adrien's ears turned pink. "Well--"
"I'm in!" Marinette clapped her hands excitedly. "This is going to be perfect! I'll find out whether Alya likes him, and I'll tell you."
"Should we meet here tomorrow after the dance planning? If we're going to do this, Nino has to ask dramatically. We'll need a game plan."
"That works for me!"
"I better get home. I'll see you tomorrow Marinette." Adrien waved and gathered his things, ringing the bell as he left like a little cat.
Marinette raced upstairs. "Tikki! Did you hear that! I didn't stutter once! And we're hanging out after school tomorrow!" Marinette gave a victory dance and her small friend clapped her hands.
"Marinette, I am so proud of you." Tikki said. "Do you not like him as much?"
She sat on the edge of her bed and thought. "I definitely still like him, but something was different." Marinette thought of Chat Noir's goofy grin and shook the feeling off. "I'm probably just getting more comfortable around him."
"Either way, it's a step in the right direction." Tikki yawned. "You should probably start getting ready for bed; I'm sleepy."
Marinate showered quickly and changed into her pjs. She hesitated, exchanging her old pajama shirt for the one from Adrien and wrapped up in a pile of blankets.
Sleep would not come. Marinette stayed in between the world of dreams and reality, unable to sleep but unable to wake up. Her mind was far too wired to drift off, and every time she tried it ended in failure.
Finally, Marinette felt her body slip into sleep, Adrien's green eyes blending with Chat Noir's.
