CHAPTER 1

Left. Right. Left. Right

My feet hit the pavement of the track. My lungs were on fire and my legs were begging me to stop, but I had to keep going. I had to beat him, even if it killed me. And trust me, I knew that I was overdoing it.

"Five, four, three-."

The fake announcer kid didn't get to finish. I had crossed the finish line at four. My friends started cheering and a few people clapped. Most of the guys were too busy laughing at my friend, Leo. He had just been beaten by a girl.

"Not bad, Harrison." My coach gave me a pat on the back. "Not bad at all." I smiled. Now, let's start this story right. My name is Shayna Harrison, I am 16 years old and the boy scowling in the corner like a baby is my best friend since kindergarten, Leonardo Giovanni Garrison. Let’s just say he was robbed in the name department. Anyway, we were in gym class and racing on the track. Leo had gotten the highest time, 39 seconds. I just beat him with a time of 36 seconds. I received high fives from most of the girls and some of the guys. Others were annoyed, like Leo, that I had beat their times. Well it's not my fault they chose to be so dang slow today! So everyone started heading to the locker rooms and I took the opportunity to hop on Leo's back.

"Shay," Leo said, using the nickname that he's been calling me since I was five, "I would highly appreciate it if you got off of me." He said while trying to shake me off.

"Oh come on Leo. I'm too tired from beating you to walk." I whined, while gripping him tighter. He threw me a glare over his shoulder and I smiled innocently. He sighed and kindly carried me over to the girls locker room.

"Thanks Leo." I said while making a heart with my hands. He rolled his eyes, but smiled none the less.

"Yeah, yeah, whatever. I'll see you at lunch." He said and headed over to the boys locker room. I shook my head and entered the locker room. I shared a gym locker with my friend Elizabeth. We called her Lizzie for short. I began changing and heard Lizzie chuckle beside me.

"Why don't you just tell the boy that you like him already?" Lizzie asked while putting in her earrings.

"Three reasons. One, he doesn't like me. Two, he's dating someone else. And three, he is my best friend. That is restricted territory." I said while spraying myself with perfume. I didn't want to smell after gym.

"And don't forget the fact that he's popular and she's not." My friend Violet pointed out.

"Exactly, Vi! That's four reasons why I shouldn't!" I exclaimed. The locker room was so noisy that barely anyone heard me. I grabbed my bag and headed out to meet my other friend Sammi.

We waited for the other two to finish until the bell rang. They finally came out and we were able to head to lunch. In the lunch room, there was like this unwritten rule that you had to stay at your specific table all throughout high school. Stupid, I know, but that's how it is. So Leo sat on one side of the cafeteria while I sat on the opposite. I sighed. It's been that way since the first day of freshman year. I can honestly say that I miss having lunch with him, but I at least have friends like Lizzie, Vi, and Sammi. I might as well tell you about them while we're on the subject of friends.

Lizzie is in blunt cases, the leader. I am in a way, the second in command because I don't annoy her easily. Violet is the nice one of the group, but very devious. She'll be so nice and sweet and then be telling you that it would be funny to set a fireworks place on fire. She's definitely unconventional. Lastly is Sammi. The smart one who is a total tomboy compared to the rest of us. The rest of us aren't necessarily girly but we're not complete tomboys like Sammi. That's why the guys like her. She pretty, knows how to dress, and is one of them practically.
