Beep, Beep, Beep!

My least favorite sound ever; my alarm. I turned over to my nightstand and quickly shut off my alarm. I groaned as the thought of school crossed my mind. Summer had gone by too quick and all this talk of college was freaking my out. At least I was a senior now.

I got up and went through to pick out what to wear. Since I didn't actually know many people or even have friends, I never really tried on my school outfits. I would consider people that I talk to as an acquantaince not a friend. I was always invisible and I didn't really mind. I didn't bother anyone and no one bothered me.

I went to my walk-in closet and picked up dark skinny jeans and paired it with a light pink shirt with lace sleeves that came down to just below my elbows. I wore my black converse and brushed my slightly wavy light brown hair. I didn't bother adding makeup. It's not like anyone noticed me anyways.

When I finished getting ready, I walked downstairs to get some breakfast. I saw my mom rushing to get stuff in her folder, as always. My dad died when I was only 8 years old of cancer. Ever since, it's just been my mom and I in this huge house.

My mom is a prosecutor and she works in Tallahasee which is about thirty minutes from Crawfordville, my small town. I wish I could see her more often but she's gone most of the time.

"Good Morning Emma. I made pancakes for your first day of school." She looked up at me and gave me a small smile as I made my way to the plate she had already set up for me.

"Good Morning Mom."

"Listen, I have to go but don't forget to turn off the dryer before you go. I might be home late today..." She trailed off, still focusing on organizing a stack of papers.

Of course you will, I thought.

"Emma, try to make friends this year, okay?" she had a glint of hope in her eyes.

"Will do." I blankly responded. It's kind of hard to do that when my school is full of annoying people who care about pointless stuff. Thank god it's my last year then off to university I go.

She said goodbye and rushed out the door, leaving me annoyed.

Once I finished breakfast, I picked up my bag and headed out the door. I locked my door and made my way to school. It was about a fifteen minute walk. Since my town is really small, most kids from school live in my neighborhood since their parents work in the city.

I hate how everyone at school tries to show off the fact that they're wealthy. I mean, I do have money since my mom is a prosecutor but I don't try to compete with others on who has the best things. I find it ridiculous and pointless.

After entering the school, I made my way to the 12th grade office and waited in a short line to get my schedule.

Period 1: AP English Language

Period 2: AP Calculus

Period 3: Physics

Period 4: AP Economics

Period 5: Spanish 4

Period 6: Lunch (40 minutes)

Period 7: Free Period

I was satisfied with my schedule. Since I had free period last, that meant I could leave school early which I was really happy about. I actually only had three more credits needed to graduate because over the summers, I took courses online. I know; I'm such a nerd sometimes.

I made my way to AP English Language avoiding as many people as I could. When I walked in, there were only a couple people there. There was ten minutes until the bell would ring. I decided to sit in the front. The teacher was sitting in her desk reading "Pride and Prejudice."

She looked to be about late 30s and had super straight, short brown hair and wore glasses. She wasn't fat and I couldn't help but notice that with a little concealer she would appear much younger.

On the board, her name was written; Mrs. Benson.

As kids started pouring in, I couldn't help but notice that Derek Barlow was in this class. Since when does he take AP classes? I cringed when I saw Madison Loren following behind him. She's the most popular girl at Crawfordville High School and thinks she owns the school.

With her shiny blonde hair and stunning green eyes, there was no reason she wasn't. Also, the fact that this school only had about 800 kids also played a factor.

Derek sat next to Madison and looked annoyed as she giggled at something that he said. Derek was the school's bad boy, you could say. He hasn't gone to jail but vandalizing, breaking rules and skipping class are his forte.

Derek Barlow is the one that all the girls want; especially Madison. I think he finds her annoying seeing as he pays almost no attention to her. He's mostly seen with his two friends Kyle and Logan.

Derek's jet black hair, his signature leather jacket and beautiful green eyes are the things that makes the girls go crazy. Wait, did I just call Derek's eyes beautiful? No doubt he is attractive but his personality ruins it.

The bell rings and Mrs. Benson calls out attendance and discusses the course and the workload. She's giving us our first project next week and it will be in partners. Great, I thought sarcastically. I don't know anyone in this class and I prefer to work alone anyways.

On Monday during AP English Language, Mrs. Benson talked about the project.

She stood at her podium while speaking. "It's a very simple project since it's the first one." She picked up a book off her desk. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.

"You and your partner will have two weeks to read each chapter and analyze it. By analyze, I mean write what YOU think the character is feeling, write down what's going through their head and talk about what happend in the chapter. Basically summarize each chapter is what you'll have to do." Sounds easy enough plus I've already read that book.

"I gave you two weeks although I know you can do it in one. The reason being that I have a lot of paperwork to do and grading this project won't be my main focus."

While she talked, I looked around the room a little and didn't find anyone I'd like to work with. I just hope I didn't get stuck with Madison.

My attention was back on Mrs. Benson. "I've done this in the past years and have let people pick their partner but due to the lack of effort, I have started picking them."

I picked at my fingernail and picked an imaginary piece of lint on my jeans. I really hope she picked someone decent.

"I will only give you some time in class to work on it and the rest will have to be outside of class so make arrangements with your partner." She stated. I sighed in frustration.

She went to her computer and the list of partners came up on the projecter. I was too afraid to look. I heard others cheer and others groan. After picking at my fingernail once more, I looked up to see who my dreaded partner would be.

Emma Mercer and...Derek Barlow.

Not the most interesting chapter, I know but I just want everyone to get a feel of everyone. This is my first story on wattpad and I would appreciate feedback. I will try to update at least twice a week or more if possible. I still don't know what I'm gonna do with this story yet.
