"He WHAT?" Kayla says a little too loudly. I just finished telling her about how Derek asked me on a picnic today. She came over my house around ten in the morning, hungover, to ask if she did anything regretful at the party while she was drunk. I told her I wasn't sure but I was positive she didn't since there would've been pictures posted on Instagram by now. It was about to be eleven soon and I knew I had to get ready to hang out with Derek.
"Do you know how big of a deal this is?" Her eyes widened so large, I was sure they were about to fall off. The sight was enough to make me wanna laugh hysterically. She started pacing around my room mumbling incoherent words. I didn't expect this type of reaction.
"Derek Barlow isn't just nice to anyone, Emma." She ran a hand through her hair. "He's basically a dick to everyone except you which is weird..." she trailed off. I had found it weird that Derek had even bothered to ask me anywhere. I started to re-think whether I should've even gone out with him but I would have probably regret it if I hadn't done it. Plus, he was the only guy who didn't stop talking to me after a project ends so I gave him creds for that. But I was also eerie around him because of past rumors and things that he has done.
"He. likes. you," Kayla suddenly stopped her pacing and had a glint of amusement in her eyes. My eyes went so wide she struggled to contain her laughter.
"N-no he doesn't," I immediately retorted. Never in a million years would Derek go for anyone like myself. He just felt bad for me and thought that by taking me out on a picnic, I wouldn't be so antisocial. "Oh-kay but don't say I didn't tell you sooner," Kayla walked out of my room and downstairs, presumably to return home. In about an hour he would probably be arriving and taking me out, only as friends of course.
I started to get ready. I put on my black shorts and a white shirt with paired with my white converse. I left my hair in it's natural state; loose waves.
After sitting around my couch flipping through random channels for a while, I heard a knock at the door at precisely 12:35pm. I opened the door to a very attractive Derek and his black car in my driveway. I shivered slightly as his eyes went up and down my body.
"Ready?" He finally spoke. I simply nodded, feeling shaky for a moment. I walked out, locked my door, and stuffed my key in my pocket. He led me to his car but didn't open the door for me. Not a date, remember.
"You like the Ramones?" he asked, referring to my shirt.
"Yeah, they're my favorite band." I finally spoke up. Why did I feel so awkward around him. Being around him gave me a weird feeling. The radio was currently playing "Give Me Love" by Ed Sheeran and that didn't help with the awkwardness surrounded around us. "How's your day so far?"
"Pretty good.Except the fact that I burned my pancakes this morning." He chuckled at my misfortune. His laugh was really deep and it made me want to say something funny again just to hear it.
We pulled up the town park and I spotted the big oak tree I remembered as a child. I had a very nostalgic feeling and I remembered a time when my cousin and I climbed it, thinking we were cool. We both stayed in the car for a few seconds, not speaking any words.
"Sorry about last night."
"What are you sorry for?" I questioned. If I recall well, and I do, he did nothing worth apologizing for.
"For Madison and the way she spoke to you. She's like that sometimes but don't let it get to you." He looked at me and his eyes landed on mine.
"Sometimes? All the time, actually." That made him laugh slightly and he ran a hand through his tousled hair. "And it's not your fault. It's not like you can control what she says."
"Right." He reached into the back seat and pulled out a picnic basket. "Here's our lunch. And the sky's getting dark so we should get out before it rains."
I looked outside. I hadn't even noticed the dark clouds. It looked like it was gonna rain any second now. We both exited his vehicle and walked over to the big tree. He was a little too close to me. Close enough to where I could smell his cologne and feel his wrist brushing up against mine. He walked a little ahead of me and through his thin white shirt, I spotted what I thought was an outline of a tattoo. I couldn't actually see it since it was covered, though. Once we reached a good spot, he sat down and put the basket in between us. I was a safe sitting distance from Derek.
"You know I used to come here a lot as a child." I started making small talk. For some reason, I felt more nervous than usual speaking to him. He turned his head over. "Really?"
"Yeah, it was kind of my little hideaway since I barely had friends." I chuckled softly and remembered my younger years. "I guess no one liked me."
"Well, I like you." Derek instantly replied.
