Everyone seems to think that the wild is a happy place, where you can be free to run the wide open fields and breathe the fresh, forest air. Well, they are mistaken, especially at this time of year!

It's winter so we are all hungry. The grass is covered with a white substance that others call snow. The stream is frozen and the only way to get that water is by stepping on the ice and feeling the treacherous pain seeping through your whole body like daggers.

Anyway, sometimes it can be a good time of year as it is the time when we fight over a new leader of the pecking order. I am going to win this fight this year! Last year, however, I was kicked in the face by another horse and fell into submission. I still have the scar across my eye.

Leaving it on that note, can you guess my name? No? Ok, I'll just tell you, it's Scarlett (or Scar for short). I got that name after the battle as they hadn't named me yet because I'm still very young. Even though I am young, I am one of the tallest, strongest and bravest in the herd. The others don't think that I'll become the top of the pecking order because I am a mare but the gender of which I am makes no difference.

Let me introduce you to the rest of my herd. At the top of the pecking order is Damian, who is the one who gave me that scar and my name. There are also a lot of stallions in our herd such as Mystery and Rusty but they usually just hang around on their own as they are the best of friends. Also, there is my best friend Stacy, whom of which I am always with. There are only 3 mares in our herd and the 3rd and final mare is Liv. She is perfect in her form and her face and coat colour and she gets all of the stallions, so there must be something wrong with her! Yes, there is, she is such a bully towards me and makes me so mad that when I get my place at the leader of this herd, I will order everyone to kick her as hard as they can and then banish her from our herd!

That's basically put herd over with, apart from one stallion. This ones called Blake and his coat is as black as midnight and has a dashing white blaze on his face that compliments his complexion perfectly. He is Liv's mate though so him and I are not meant to be.

Finally, there's me. I am called Scarlett and I am 15.2 hh. I lost last years battle and am preparing for this years. My coat is supposed to be white but it is usually covered in black spots of mud because mud feels so nice when you rub your body against it for hours and hours... I am not really the most attractive mare you will ever meet but I can live mate less forever, I don't mind, I never wanted children anyway!

Anyway, I need to get back to preparation now...
