Chapter 23-- Empty

Jay's P.O.V

I woke up tied to the wall. Mitch, Jerome, Sean, and Adam were tied along with me. Across the sandy cave, all the other dwellers were tied to the wall. Rue and Iris stood in the center of the room.

"Call Wilford, Dark, and Anti. These people were all in the asylum; they've got to have demons," Rue spoke in a low voice to Iris.

Iris nodded, a look of worry in her eyes as she connected gazes with me. Rue didn't notice that I was awake at all.

Rue left, and Iris strode over to us. She untied me from the wall and while I adjusted, she woke up the others. Iris gave me a strange look.

"It's Rhea," She murmured. "And if you don't get your asses out of here they'll add to their army."

We snuck out the front cave entrance, only for Sean to run directly into Rue. Rue grinned and gave a devilish look to Iris, who cowered behind Adam.

"Hello, friends. I see you've awoken. Come with me," Rue growled.

Suddenly, a bullet embedded itself in Rue's chest. Bri pummeled through the bushes and grabbed Jerome, kissing him straight on the lips. Jerome looked surprised, but Adam looked pissed and sad at the same time.

"Jay.." Bri breathed. "It's Mark."

Bri gave me a look and ran back through the bushes. She came back with Dani, and they were both dragging a lifeless body. Iris ran up to help. The lifeless body was Mark's.

I stumbled up to Mark, dropping to my knees. I just stared at him, while everyone else stared at me. Suddenly, Sean broke the silence.

"What do we do now?"

Sean's eyes were full of tears and his eyebrows were furrowed in anger. His fists were clenched and he was breathing heavily. He looked like he wanted to murder someone.

Before I could respond, Rue popped right back up to his feet.

"I told you, come with me," he growled.

Sean spun around to face him, growling, "You killed him. You killed my best friend. You little shit, I will fucking murder you!"

Sean grabbed Rue by the neck and dug in with his fingernails. Rue stood there, unaffected and grinning. Sean released him, and backed up.

"Too weak, are we now?" Rue mocked.

Suddenly Sean charged at him. Sean's eyes were dark and full of rage. I blinked and Rue was being legitimately strangled. Rue's color was fading, and Sean was changing. Sean was stealing Rue's power. I didn't understand how.

Rue dropped to the ground, lifeless. Iris gave a blank stare. She looked like she'd seen a ghost.

"How did you do that?" She whispered.

Sean gave a devilish grin, his eyes turning black with green pupils that gave off a green flame. Bri walked up to him. Sean stared down at her while she grabbed his arm. She seemed to search for something, and then she found it.

"Dani, he has one.. but it's not like ours."

"Has what?" I asked, my voice cracking in sadness.

Bri yanked Sean over to me with difficultly. She showed me a tattoo that, in curly black letters, read beast. I'd noticed Sean had gradually gotten taller and more muscular as the seconds went on. Sean hadn't said a word since he killed Rue, either. Now he decided to speak up.

"All I want to do is kill.." He growled, grinning at me and his eyes flashing.

He then rapidly shrunk back to his normally skinny size and fainted. Jerome caught him and laid him gently on the ground.

"What the fuck, man.." Jerome whispered.

Dani spoke up in her soft voice, "We need to get out of here. It's too dangerous."

Mitch nodded, and everyone else seemed to agree. I remained kneeling by Mark.

"Jay.."

"Just call me Jessi, okay?! Might as well call me by my real name.." I shouted at them.

I stood up and grabbed Mark's cold hand. I tried to yank him to his feet. He couldn't be dead. He's not dead! I screamed to myself.

Jerome grabbed my shoulders, whispering, "We need to go."

While I was having my breakdown, Iris had gotten some water and dumped it all over Sean and he was awake. He was very pale and his eyes had no life.

Everyone seemed lifeless and empty.

Just like Mark.
