"Nicole!?" I said looking at the girl standing out in the pouring rain. Her silhouette outlined by the porch light. Her hair was stuck to her face with rain. The rain drenched her clothes and her makeup was smudged. "What are you doing here? Why are you here? What's wrong? Why do you have all your stuff with you?"
"My landlord kicked me out. I haven't paid my rent in a while— I— I— lost my job last year." She said shivering. "I— I— need somewhere to stay. Please. I need a home."
"And why would you come here why would I let you stay here after you broke my heart?" Squid asked her.
"David, can't you see she needs help? We can't just leave her in the cold. She'll freeze to death." I said, letting Nicole in. I touched her cheek, it was ice cold. "Nicole, the third door, up the stairs, on the left. That's the guest room. Feel free to stay as long as you need. Help yourself to the food in the fridge." I told her, pointing her to the room, "You can put your stuff in the dresser."
"Beth, what are you doing? We can't let her live here." David said.
"You're not over her. Are you?" I said, closing the front door.
He sighed, "No I'm not. But I'm in a relationship now. And I'm happily committed." He kissed me on the head and went up to bed.
Why did I let Nicole stay here? I know, I didn't want her to end up homeless, she had done so much for me. It was my turn to do the same
