Katy! Get your butt down here this instant!" Yells my dad. Oh crap. He's been drinking again.
"Coming!" I yell back. I close my math book and take a deep breath. I know what to expect, but that doesn't get rid of the butterflies in my stomach. As I thump down the stairs, I try to think what I might've done wrong. Even being drunk, dad doesn't usually get mad at me for nothing. Usually.
"Ya dad? What's wrong?" I ask.
"Why is this kitchen a mess? I told you to clean it up! Why don't you ever listen to me? Your worthless! You know nothing! I wish I didn't have to take care of you! You're an ungrateful brat!"
I don't even bother to react. It would Only urge him further. I've learned to keep my heart closed so that the words won't sting so much. I look around the kitchen, but all I see is my soup bowl from lunch. I knew it wasn't enough to do the dishes again so I left it. Bad idea.
"I'm really sorry dad. I didn't think-"
"Of course you didn't think! You never do! You useless teenagers think you can get away with anything!"
He stomps upstairs and slams his bedroom door closed. I quietly wash the bowl and make sure the kitchen and living room is to his satisfaction. Then I head upstairs. As I tiptoe past his bedroom, I hear his grizzly snores. Good. He's sleeping it off. Then I head to my room to finish my homework. When my mom gets home I tiptoe past the bedroom again and greet my mom with a hug.
"Hi sweetie! Wow! You really cleaned up nice! Is your dad home?"
"Ya. He's upstairs sleeping." She gives me a sympathetic look.
"Well, it looks great honey!" Then she goes upstairs to relax after work. Not for the first time, I wish my mom and I could pack up and move. At least I've got my friends and school as an escape. I look at the clock and silently curse. Oh no! I have to make supper! I decide to make tacos hoping that it will put dad in a good mood. I could only hope. I couldn't wait till school the next day.
