Depression.
Trigger warning//anxiety, depression, sad stuff
•••••••••••••••Another hopeless day in Mayaville. Her mom had thrown things at her and kicked her out of the house. At least Maya was dressed and ready- she could still walk to school.
Maya thought she was prepared for her classmates making fun of her and the constant snickering, but let's be honest, she wasn't prepared at all for what was going to happen.
She got to school and everything was normal. Maybe too normal. Nobody attacked her or called her out, it was... Peaceful. Maya silently thanked whatever God and tried her best not to be seen. She got her books and went to class where she would at least be with a teacher. She took shaky steps to math, being careful not to look at anyone or see anything.
Maya accidentally made the mistake of looking up across the hall at a tall boy. He had dark short hair and a bright smile. Maya almost laughed looking at him. What a sucker, he was going to stand out more than her. No wonder nothing had happened today. They were probably all picking on him. Except... He was still smiling. He didn't look like he had any bruises.
Maya dismissed her thoughts of the boy all together when she almost ran into someone. She didn't even apologize. She just quickly ran away, noticing that the boy she saw earlier was staring at her.

Finally, it was lunch. Maya gathered her backpack and stuff and walked out to the courtyard where she could sit quietly. Usually, any bullies would leave her alone at this time because they focused on their own lunch.
Today she was just completely wrong.
"Hey Maya." Some girl snickered behind her. Another one circled around to face Maya completely.
"W-what do you want?" Maya barely whispered.
A new person showed up at Maya's side. She noticed it was a male, which usually meant they were about to kick the crap out of her.
"Nothing, we just noticed today that you were sitting all alone." The talkative one pushed Maya off the bench. Luckily, she grabbed the table and managed to get back up.
"Look, I-I don't want any trouble." Maya told them, standing awkwardly.
The girl scoffed. "Of course, but I, um," she smirked, "I saw you looking at Lucas..."
Maya was confused but then realized who they were referring to and blushed. She shouldn't have looked up then. Maya cursed the boy who she saw. Lucas apparently. Now they were going to make fun of her, and for what? For looking at someone?
"This is stupid." Maya muttered.
"Oh I'm sorry? Could you speak up." One of the girls tapped her shoulder intimidatingly.
"I said this is stupid, why are you guys being mean about it? I looked at someone and that's all." Maya confessed, finding new confidence in herself.
"You," someone pushed her back. "Were staring at my boyfriend like he's eye-candy." They pushed her again. Maya rubbed her shoulder from the unnecessary force. The girl (Mia, Maya thought) crossed her arms. How could she already be dating a new student?
"Well? Aren't you going to say something?" She threatened Maya.
Maya looked down. "Yeah, you have a horrible taste in boyfriends."
Mia slapped Maya pretty hard and continued to go after her. Maya backed away, shielding her face with her arms. Someone held Maya's arms and kept her there while Mia's friend punched Maya in the stomach. These girls were fierce, all over a boy. This was ridiculous.
People had started to gather around and laugh. It was humiliating, and Maya took it all without a sound.
She heard someone yell and the hitting stopped. Maya looked up in surprise to see Lucas making his way towards her. He touched her arm gingerly.
"Oh my god, are you okay? Here, we need to get to the office." Lucas held out his arm and helped Maya walk. He hugged her, allowing Maya to savor his generosity and warmth.
"I'm fine, they weren't that bad, they suck at punching." Maya laughed awkwardly. Lucas brushed a strand of hair out of her face, looking intently into her eyes.
"Your lip is cut, and your eye looks like it's swelling. I don't think your okay." Lucas' fingers lingered on Maya for a moment before he started walking to the office with her again.
Maya leaned onto Lucas more and allowed her head to somewhat drift over to his shoulder. She definitely didn't feel good.
"Thank you." She mumbled.
