Hi, I'm back. This chapter alternates between Liam and Jane so, pay attention boo.
MALAKAI DOESN'T KNOW what fear is; he's only seen it in a few people, but if he could have a fear, it'd be being alone. He's always known who he was, and where he belonged, and it was in heaven as an angel. Now, identity is just this absurd, inconsequential thing that doesn't belong to him anymore.
He knows where he is finally, New York City, and he doesn't know why they call it a city if it's a state, but also knows that humans create vacuous, meaningless things to describe things that are very simple. He shifts uncomfortably, sitting down on the bus bench as he waits for a form of transportation.
The earth is rotating and he can feel it.
Can feel the sun setting into the next part of this absurd planet as he tries to comply with this being his life. The bus comes around eight p.m. and he doesn't remember time shifting so quickly.
He finds a seat next to a pregnant woman and he knows the baby's not going to make it; can feel the heart of the infant failing inside her stomach, and he doesn't feel a thing. He wants to tell the mother, but his human form has already formed a conscience and suddenly he knows the difference between right and wrong.
"Where to?" the man asks him and his body starts to shake.
I don't know, I don't know, I don't know...
He trembles until he falls asleep, the sound of the wheels rolling against the smooth pavement is something he has to get used to.
-
The twin towers are one of the most magnificent things he's ever seen.
He hasn't said anything since the fall and thinks maybe, he's scared of his own voice.
He clears his throat, and it feels odd when he opens his mouth to whisper, "Malakai," in a raspy tone that doesn't sound like it belongs to him.
"Kai," he says louder, and it almost sounds normal.
Almost.
The air feels thick and sickening. He doesn't look down. Knows that death is just a step away, and then everything will go back to normal. Or whatever normal was for him anyway.
He takes a deep breath to steady himself, and just before he falls, a stunning revelation dawns upon him. If falling from heaven and landing on Earth at 180 mph didn't kill him, what makes him think falling down a 1,362 ft building will do the job? He begins to tremble again as he bows down his head, and takes a step back from the ledge.
A chilling realization trickles through him, the force of it swaying him as he looks down at the millions and millions of tiny people below him.
He can't die. That's the fucking catch, isn't it? That's step two to his punishment, and he lets out a bitter laugh before staring into the sky. So what? He's just an emotionless human who can never die? He has to find another way.
He has no other choice. He can't be alone, left as if he was nothing, as if everything he's worked for meant nothing. He calls out to the only place he rather be than here; the only place he knows will accept him for his wrong doings.
In the back of his mind, he knows he's making a mistake. He knows summoning The Devil is something only someone lacking intelligence would do but he's desperate. Filled with hatred and disgust at the thought of staying on this dreadful planet for another second.
