[Frankly, I've always been confused why you guys instigated me to tell this chapter. It's not important, and if anything, it's a disgrace to my overall image. I mean, the way I fought! Ugh! Sorry, I know. Let's get on with it.]
Cleo was confused.
I awoke to the sound of blaring sirens. I sighed, scanning my surroundings, trying to remember when I got here and how I ended up sleeping on a park bench in San Francisco. As I rubbed the sleep out of my eyes, little snippets came back to me. Training with Lupa, the Wolf House, falling from a Pegasus and meeting two other descents of demigods- children of the seven.
Training with Lupa the past few weeks had been the worst in my life. Many, though, would say it's an honor to train with Lupa, the she-wolf. I would say not.
I grew up in a household of stories and myths. Norse, mostly, since my father was a Norse god, (long story,) but occasionally Roman stories. I've been told the story of the seven a million times.
Anyways, my mom would sometimes tell me the stories of the Fenris wolf. How Loki had an army and the Fenris wolf was the catalyst for the apocalypse. My mother told me to always be careful with Wolves, especially with talking ones.
Lupa trained me hard😉- testing me in the most cruelest and hardest ways possible. Then, finally, she gave me a weapon and told me to go south.
"A blessing from Bellona, dear child. Treat the weapon well." She had said.
I sat up and took the ring off my finger. Then, it transformed into a 7 feet long imperial gold spear. One side was engraved with the Roman word Bellona and the other, Pilum, which was a type of spear in Ancient Rome.
I don't know what she meant by, "go south," but I was just heading in any direction I had an instinct about.
I flipped the dagger a few times and sheathed it. I didn't know where to go today. If I had enough money, I'd buy a plane ticket to Kildare, my home town.
When Carter and Emma picked me up, "saving" me from a giant, I left my mom behind. I had no idea if she survived, or if our home was left.
Those two bloody kids. I wish they hadn't even taken me from Kildare.
I packed the dagger and its sheath in my backpack, taking out my iPod. Carter had told me it wasn't good to use electronics because it was like sending up a signal to monsters, but I had one of those really old iPods that don't even have the capability for Internet. They don't even have a screen to press. I stuck the earbuds in my ear and shuffled my track, walking away from the bench. I turned the corner and found myself facing the bay of San Francisco. I stood on quite a tall hill- I could see the whole bay, including the weirdest thing- a city on the coast, with eccentric buildings and aqueducts, which is a little weird for California. I did an architecture project in class last year on California, and I was pretty sure aqueducts weren't "in" right now.
I started to hike down the hill. If I'm going to be stuck here, I have to start making money somehow. I thought numbly. I'm sure I could make some extra money by performing hamlet or something.
"I see the half blood has been released from the wolf house, Hillary. What do you think?"
I turned around and saw two typical California girls. Both had long, straight blonde hair, tans, and were wearing leggings and an athletic top with doc martens, which I thought was uncool. In my opinion, tumblr hipster-ish people would never want to be seen dead in combat boots like those.
"I think she has. But I don't think she is a half blood." The one on the right said. "I think she's something more."
"What do you mean by that?" The left responded.
I flung my backpack around and unsheathed my dagger, and Hillary jumped back a little looking at it.
"I'm not a half blood." I said blindly. "Who are you."
"I am Jenny," the left pointed at herself, and then at the girl next to her. "And that's Hillary."
"What are you?" I asked.
"Humans of course!" Jenny said. "Who are you then? A goddess? Diana? Or a minor goddess?"
I frowned. "Neither or. But-"
"Then what are you?" Jenny asked.
"We just want to know before we kill you." Hillary said.
I pretended to put my dagger away. "So much for the human cover up, huh?"
"Whatever, Cleo Ramirez-Arellano. What are you? And maybe we can spare you."
It was a loss pretending. I took out my dagger and suspected it, trying to seem a lot more confidence than I felt.
"Look. Since I'm going to kill you, I'm sure it won't hurt to tell you. My grandmother is Bellona, goddess of war. My father, curse the man, is Loki, Norse god of mischief, magic, and evil."
Jenny looked confused. "That makes no sense."
Hillary's features started to change. "Forget it, Jen. Let's kill her now. When it's all gone, we can terrorize all the people we want."
When what's gone?
I shook my head, telling myself to save it for later.
I took one last look at the two teenagers and saw two full blown Norse wolves.
And then I bolted.
