Cleo woke up instantly to a bang.

I was so startled, I muttered, "Where's the cannon?" which was a line from Harry Potter, and when I gained awareness, was very mad I recited that line. I opened my eyes and realized I was still in the same can, unharmed, and honestly disgusted I was leaning on Carter. I pulled myself up disgustingly and saw Alex looking behind us in alarm. The smell of French fries still lingered and the creepy sad rap music the driver was listening to was still on. The driver was absent.

"There's no cannon, but there's a hydra." Carter informed. His brown eyes glinted with excitement, like he was going to burst into flames any moment, which was possible.

"A Hydra?!" I grunted in frustration as I scratched my head and yawned. "Why didn't you wake me up?"

"Well, we didn't know about it until 10 seconds ago." Carter responded. I rubbed my eyes again and squinted at a bright light outside the window and Carter was tinkering with something. Probably another pointless invention. As if he needed another one.

"Ay Carter, you done with that?" Alex whispered, leaning in front of me to get his point across. The driver looked at the three of us suspiciously out of the car, which looked a little weird from the window. I shot him a look.

"Hurry," I whispered in Latin. "He's getting suspicious."

"And that Hydra's getting testy, superboy." Carter said in Greek.

"Speak Latin, for gods sake, i'm the only one beside you that can speak it." I said in latin.

"You guys make no sense." Alex commented in English. Then, in latin, "Are you almost done?"

"Hold your horses." Carter grumbled. I adjusted the strap on my bag and ALex tapped his foot.

"There." Carter grumbled, handing Alex the weird contraption. It was a tin foil ball. Nothing special, but if we played our cards right, it could save our lives.

"What the heck is this?" Alex asked in latin. "This- tin foil ball is our escape?"

The driver told us he was getting a Coke from the window. Once he was gone, We looked at each other and switched to English.

"It's a smoke-bomb." Carter and I said in unison. We Looked at each other, (me in frustration,) while he smirked.

"you first." I told Carter, rolling my eyes.

"Well, it creates a smoke and a distraction." He said. "It may also blow up the car, so be quick."

"What?!" I said suddenly.

"Very unlikely." He added. "So we'll distract the driver before he takes off from the gas station, and Alex, throw this."

Alex grunted as Carter handed him the tin foil bomb.

"Don't give me that look." Carter argued to Alex. "Just trust me."

"I've known you for 13 years and I've learned not to trust you, especially when you say that." ALex commented.

"It's all we got." I said. Carter raised an eyebrow at me. "Hey, I don't like your idea, but its our only chance at not being killed."

"Wait- it only reduces it." Carter informed. I rolled my eyes and stuck my tounge out at him.

"DO you want me on your side or not?" I rubbed my temples. "Look, we can't hide in this car forever. When he comes back in-"

At that exact moment, the driver landed in the car.

Carter and I looked at each other like and had a silent conversation.

Ready? he would have said.

You first. I would have thrown back.

He gave me a look like, Please. Just go already. we're losing time.

"So, uh, Mr. Driver, how long until we arrive in Mexico neighborhood?" I said, making the mistakes on purpose as I casually combed my hair with my fingers.

"It's Mexico City, sweetheart." Carter commented to me.

I turned my head slowly. I shot daggers at his stupid, impish, smiling face. I hated how confident he was. Everyone knew not to mess with me, or call me sweetheart.

"Did you just call me sweetheart?" I growled.

"Yeah." He smiled.

"Did you know I can kill you in 48 different ways?" I took out my pocketknife.

Suddenly, something dropped and smoke bellowed everywhere.

"Oh my God!" The driver yelled. "What is that? I can't see!"

"OUT!!!!" Alex screamed.

I opened the door and rolled out.

"HEY!" the driver yelled, swerving in the middle of the road. "YOU DIDN'T PAY! COME BACK HERE!"

The hydra stomped up towards the car from down the road. The sight of them always disgusted me given their various heads and their disgusting scale color.
"RUN!" Alex screamed again. We ran was far as we could, and as if things couldn't get any more chaotic, the driver was following us, yelling.
I caught up to Alex in the lead. I didn't know where Carter was, and I supposed I should be worried about it.
I whipped my head around and the hydra promptly stepped on something.
"Wait!" I yelled to Alex.
"What?" He yelled back.
I squinted at the object and the advancing hydra.
"What is that?" I yelled in frustration.
"What?!"
I pointed to the object the Hydra stepped on, which was now on fire.
"That? Cleo, that's the car. Now let's go! We can't fight this thing!"
"Wait!" I said. He groaned. "Did Carter ever come out of the car?"
"What?"
"You need a hearing aid. Did you see Carter ever come out of the car?" I said slower.
Alex's eyes widened and a look of fear spread across his face.
"I- I didn't see him." He said finally.
I stood there for second, thinking, how could I be so stupid? Sure, he was annoying, but he didn't deserve to die.
"Oh my gods." Alex said. He gulped. "Look,"
He pointed to something.
Whatever it was, it let out a blood-curdling scream. I saw a figure and then a hydra head engulfing the figure. Then, the figure was gone.
"Carter..." I croaked.
