Amethyst and I walk home together and as we're walking she reaches out and put her arm around my hip and I do the same to her. "Hey, Claire, have you ever thought of coming out to your parents?" she asks me gently. "Yes, it's just...they're not the biggest fans of LGBTs..." I reply quietly. "Well, I mean, I would be there with you, supporting you the whole time," she answers persistently. I glare at her and sharply say, "No!". We walk the rest of the way to her house in silence.

When we get inside I collapse on her bed and start crying, in between I struggle to gain my thoughts, and how my parents would view it. "I want them to know, but they will be so disgusted by me...it would ruin them!" I struggle out. Amethyst looks at me with love in her eyes and gently says, " Honey, you would have to do it eventually, I mean you're not just going to grow up and marry a man without ever acknowledging how you honestly feel, are you? Would you really do all that just for your parents? Doesn't that sound wrong to you?" Don't you want to live your own life, not the life your parents make for you?" I won't meet her eyes as I tell her, "But they're my family..." "Your family doesn't know what's best for you, hell, I don't think they even know you!" she replies heatedly. Finally I find the courage to find her eyes watching me intently and say. "You know what, screw my family, let's do this!".

Emmy and I decide(after hours of cuddling and arguing) that I should call my parents and tell them I want them to meet my new "boyfriend". I look at Amethyst nervously and she nods at me, so I dial my moms number and put the phone to my ear. After the third dial tone she picks up and says, "Hey sweetie, what's up?" "Hey mom, I just wanted to call you about having someone over for dinner to meet you guys tomorrow night" I tell her hesitantly. "Honey, is this a serious boyfriend of yours?? If so your dad and I definitely want to meet him!" she says in that caring parent kind of way. "Uhhhh...something like that," I reply. Then my mom said she had to go, so we said our goodbyes and finally hung up. I look at Emmy, "Sooo, you ready?" "Whenever you are," she says. And just like that, we stay in each others arms all night, looking into each others eyes.

The next day we wake up by the sound of Emmy's phone going off. We quickly brush our hair and teeth and I borrow a pair of her clothes(which surprisingly fit alright) and then we took her car to school. Once we got there we see Addy, Sarah, and Kacey, who's this senior(girl) who is friends with them. They're all in a huddle and look very concerned about something. As soon as they see us they hush up, turn around, and all say, "Hello!" at the same time, with very cheery voices. Emmy and I glance at each other, there's obviously something up here... I think to myself. "Well it sure is nice to see you guys here! What's up?" I say brightly, trying to hide the doubt in my voice. Addy replies"Oh well, to be honest things aren't going very well around here...you see we've be-" all of a sudden Addy is interrupted by Sarah who grabs Addy's arm, whispers something in her ear, then glares at Kacey and says to us with a calm expression, "I'm very sorry to say that some threats have been posed to one of our dear and close friend, and we would not like to share any more information." Kacey then looks at us and interjects, "WE would like to talk to y'all about it sometime, we could use some help, how about tomorrow afternoon after school?". "That sounds great!!" Emmy says excitedly before I can interject. "Alright that, sounds good," says Sarah and some of the lines of tension leave her face. "See y'all around!!" Addy says. "BYE!" They all say in unison while they wave their hands and walk away. "Goodbye!" we say back and then we're off to homeroom.

While we walked down the hallway with our arms around each other we hear people whispering about us. I hear many comments that stung my heart, like "Fags...what a whore...they should go to hell...ha ha, look at them, one's a cunt the others a total bitch..." but it was all worth for Emmy and I know I would be hearing it for the rest of my life, I just need to accept who I am and get on with it. Unfortunately my first class of the day is not with Emmy. When I get there I sit down in the back and some senior named Calum with a T-shirt that says #livingthethuglife. I get one glance at him before I sit down and I have a horrible feeling. As soon as my books hit the desk Calum starts making trouble. While our teacher was passing back some graded tests Calum starts talking and talking while I'm trying to study all of a sudden our teacher says, "Miss Claire please stop talking!!!!!!" "But I wasn't talking!" I reply, shocked. "and under any circumstance do NOT talk back!" he yells. And that was the end of that, I left that class with a detention slip in hand and a scowl on my face.

At the end of the day Emmy and I meet up and walk out together. We pass Rose and Anna and we all wave to each other and then keep on walking. Then we hear a car honk, we turn around and see my mom's car. "Hey hun!!! she yells as she sticks her head out the window. "I got of work early to pick you and your new boyfriend up," she says a little quieter as we approach the car. I start of by saying cautiously."Well...Mom, I wanted to introduce me to my g-" "Good friend!" Emmy interrupts. "I'm Amethyst, but you can call me Emmy, and Claire and I have become good friends over the past few months." she continues on. "Well it's nice to meet you Emmy!" My mom says with a huge grin on her face. "Would you like to have dinner with our family too, along with Claire's new boyfriend?" she asks. "Of course Mrs. Lowe!" Emmy replies and plasters a fake smile on her face. So we get in the car and drive to my house...

Emmy and I had been hanging upstairs in my room for a while when finally my parents call us down for the "big celebration" dinner. Once we come down and we all sit at the table my sister asks me, "Where's your new boyfriend Claire?" and that's when I finally tell my family. "I actually invited Emmy to come to dinner with us so I could introduce her to you as my girlfriend." I hear a gasp from my mother but I continue on with saying, "And we are very happy together and all our friends support us, so I finally wanted to tell you and share with you my happiness." My parents finally look up at me when I finish. "Honey, is this true? Your...one of those foul creatures? These things should never be spoken of, they're the secrets to be kept behind locked doors! GET OUT OF MY HOUSE YOU ARE NOT MY DAUGHTER!" I look at my father who's eyes won't meet my gaze, and then I see my sister, she looks like she's about to strangle my parents but she knows there's nothing she can do, she looks at me and moves the words I love you. I stand there for a few seconds letting the tears fall down my face, finally Emmy grabs me gently and steers me out the door and towards her house.
