I quickly jump to my feet, dusting off any dirt on my clothes, and hide behind the tree. The Black carriage comes quickly down the path, followed by black covered guards on horses. The villagers start to panic. Some seek shelter in there homes. I watch as I see the guards try to keep everyone in the center of the square. The carriage comes grinding to a stop at the entrance of the town square. Big strong looking guards climb off the front, of the carriage, and there horses. I can feel my body tense as they open the carriage door. A very beautiful, and intimidating woman steps out of the carriage. My breath hitches in my throat, and I feel my heart start to race.
The Queen had smug look on her face as she scanned the town. She wore a crimson dress, that is covered in jewel. The collar around her neck was full of long black feathers. The dress fit the Queen perfectly, as it captured every curve. Her hair was in a high bun. it almost looked as if it was a crown. The way she gazes at people makes me shudder. If looks could kill, everyone in this town would be dead.
"Listen well all of you, for I will only say this once." She said with a dark expression. "There is rumor spreading across the realm that the people in this town have aided, and sheltered the bandit Snow White in these last few weeks. If you haven't already known that is illegal. Any one caught aiding Snow White will be seen as an accessory to crime, and will be sentenced to death. If you fail to make a report of her whereabouts, or information on who's aiding her. Than every day I will claim a life."
Suddenly my hatred for that stupid Snow White grows. She claims she's a hero. Well a hero wouldn't run from a fight. I saw Snow White here two days ago. She made a speech about standing up to the Evil Queen. And that she was here to protect her people. Instead she pissed off the Queen, and she is know where to be seen. Now the dumb villagers who supported her are going to pay for her mistake.
"Now." She spits. "Would anyone like to tell me where she has been in the last few weeks?" She says as she paces in font of the villagers. I look around. Mostly everyone is looking at there own feet, or at each other. Their all to afraid to say who's been helping Snow White. The Queen rolls her eyes impatiently. "Your telling me not one person can give me an ounce of information about Snow White?!" She spits, and eyes Fergus. "Very well. Guards! Kill him!" She growls. The guards draw there swords, and approach Fergus. My heart pounds out of my chest, as one of the guards prepares to take a swing.
"Stop!" I scream as I run to the center of the square. The guard doesn't even flinch, and he swings his sword in the direction of Fergus's head. I muster up my strength, and wave my hand at him. I send a rock the size of a large apple at his head. I hit him hard in the head, and he just misses Fergus. I breath out a sigh of relief. I look at the Queen who is looking from me to the knocked out guard. The other guards pull out their swords, and advance on me. I breath heavily, and wave my hand again, and send two of the guards flying across the square. Their are two still cautiously advancing on me. I lift my hands so their parallel with the ground. I quickly push my hands down through the air, and watch the two remaining guards sink through the ground to their chests. The queen looks at all her injured guards dumbfounded. I turn, and quickly run as fast as I can through the woods, and to my tent.
"Oh shit, shit, shit!" I breath out as I run through the forest. My heart pounds through my chest as I cant get the vision of the Queens face out of my head. "Your so dead Mara! How could you be so stupid!" I reach my tent, and quickly start packing my things. "You should have just let them kill him" What I just said tasted vile in my mouth, and it made me want to vomit. Sure Fergus was one of the greatest aids to Snow White, and he knew what he was getting into. But he was my only friend.
"I cant believe this is..." A vine wraps around my waist and hands from behind me, and pulls me against a tree. The more I struggle the tighter it seems to get. I look around wildly until my eyes fall upon the Queen smiling at me. My spine stiffens, and I widen my eyes as I look at her.
"My, my. That was quite the little show you put on." She says sweetly, and casually walks closer to me. "You gave my guards a bit of a hard time." I swallow hard as she closes in on me, leaving about a foot of space in between us. "Is there anything you would like to say for yourself Dear?" She says smiling.
I nod my head quickly. "I'm so sorry your Majesty. I didn't mean to do it. I just.." She put her finger on my lips, telling me to stop. I stop, and look at her brown orbs.
She squints her eyes, and looks deep into mine."Your telling me that you 'didn't mean' to injure half of my guards?" She states rhetorically.I nod, then shake my head. "W-Well I did mean to injure them, but only because they were going to kill my friend. I'm so sorry your Maje..." She places her finger back on my quivering lips.
"That was very foolish my Dear. Foolish, but also brave. Tell me girl. What is your name?" She cups my chin, and caresses it with her thumb.
"M-Mara." I squeak out. The Queen pulls back, and looks at the stone tent, and the hunting supplies.
"Tell me Mara. Is this where Snow White stays?" She asks as she pokes around my stuff.
I shake my head. "No your Majesty. This." I let out an embarrassed sigh. "This is where I live." The Queen looks at me intrigued. "She was here just two days ago. Spreading lies about you, and trying to get the village to join her in battle. I'm afraid that's all I know. Nobody really talks to me here. Especially when it comes to Snow White. They all know I fallow you. Last I heard she was headed to Bean Town." Everything I said to her was true. Ever since I was little I always felt connected to the Queen. And now that she's standing in front of me, all I want to do is please her. "You live here? Alone?"
I nod, and she smiles sadly, and with a wave of her hand the vines untie, and I fall to my knees. I stand, and watch her carefully. "You've given me more information about Snow White than I've received in the last two months. As a reward how would you like to live with me in my castle?" She says with a smile. My mouth drops, and she lets out a chuckle.
"Really? You would allow me to live with you?" I ask with a shocked expression.
She nods her head. "Well someone needs to teach you how to use your magic properly. Its surprising you haven't accidentally blown your own arm off by now. Besides, you could be quite useful to me."
I curl my lips into a small smile. "Thank you your Majesty."
"You may call me Regina, Mara. Now come here." She says in a strict manner. I quickly shuffle to her, and notice the small smirk she's hiding. "Hold my hand please." She says extending her arm. I sheepishly grab her hand. A quick puff of purple smoke circled us, and in mere seconds we were inside her carriage. I quickly let go of her hand, and let the weird rush of electricity go through me.
"Like the feeling?" She asks with a smirk. I nod slightly. "Its magic." She looks up, and down my body. I look down as well, and notice how extremely dirty I am. "Its straight into the bath when we get home Dear." She says with a big smile. I blush and nod, and make myself comfortable. As I watch the sun go down I feel my eyes grow heavy, I close them for most of the journey to Regina's castle. I feel warm arms scoop me up. I let my tired body rest in the persons lap, and drift off into a heavy sleep.
