Conner Mckinley sat at the edge of the cliff, staring down at the water with a blank expression. Even though his mind was more cluttered than it had ever been, he still felt empty inside. Like he was missing something. The cliff was about 4 stories high, with a big musty river at the bottom. He closed his eyes and listened to the swooshing of the water, trying to find himself.
Suddenly he heard rustling behind him.
"Heya, Conner! Something up?"
A familiar voice asked.Conner gasped, slightly startled.
"Oh, uhm... No, not really." He answered.Kevin sat down on the edge of the cliff next to Conner, dangling his legs.
"You've been acting kinda weird lately." Kevin said, concerned."Really? Hm... That's odd. Nothing's bothering me."
The reality was, Conner loved Kevin. He loved Kevin's perfect, blonde hair, his chocolate brown eyes, and his gorgeous singing voice. Every time Kevin Price looked him in the eyes, he got butterflies. Conner was just always too afraid of Kevin judging him to reveal his feelings.
Kevin wouldn't judge him though, he actually felt very similar towards Conner. Except he wasn't scared to confess, he was just waiting for the right time.
"Well, not to interrupt you or... You know... Stress you out or anything. But, we need you back at the mission hut." Kevin said, cautiously.
"Why?"
"Some sort of 'Imperative news.' We need all of the Elders together and safe."
Conner raised an eyebrow. Safe? He didn't want to overthink it and worry too much, but by the way Kevin worded that phrase, it sounding slightly terrifying.
"Safe?" Conner asked."I don't know." Kevin answered with a small chuckle. "Let's go find out."
They arrived at the hut, and Pop Tarts closed the door, frantically locking it. All of the Elders sat around the coffee table. Some had care-free looks on their faces, not prepared for the news in store. The rest were either concerned or scared.
Conner's heart started to beat out of his chest.
"Um... Why so... You know..." Conner couldn't think of a word due to his nerves. "...Locky?"
Elder Thomas sighed.
"Okay guys... I hate to be the bearer of bad news... But something incredibly dangerous is going on right now."Kevin's expression dropped. "What? W-what is it?" Out of instinct, he grabbed Conner's arm. He didn't realize his action, but it was only his reflex to make sure Conner stays safe.
Conner's heart jumped. He didn't question why Kevin was holding him, he was more worried about the 'bad news.' He flashed a small smile and shook it off, directing his attention back to Elder Thomas."So, there is... um..." Pop Tarts didn't know how to break the news.
"Someone... loose. Out there, very locally. We don't know where he came from, or why he is doing this, but he basically..." He sighed."He murders people."
Everyone jumped back and started to panic in unison. Conner's eyes just filled with tears, and he clinged to Kevin for support.
"We might have to stay in here for a while." Elder Thomas finished.
"Until it's clear."Elder Cunningham shoved through the elders with tears streaming down his face. He ripped off his glasses and violently wiped his tears.
"Naba is out there!" He yelled.Pop Tarts sighed. "You can't-"
"NABA! IS! OUT! THERE! DO YOU UNDERSTAND?!"
Elder Thomas gulped loudly.
"Uh... well.. You can't leave this hut or you'll put yourself in danger! I'm sorry, Arnold, We can't lose you!"
Arnold huffed, endless tears running down his red cheeks.
"I... Don't care. I'm willing to make any sacrifice for Naba." He said, heading towards the door."Arnold, please!" Kevin begged. But before they knew it, Arnold was gone.
They collectively sighed."I tried, guys-" Elder Thomas said.
"I can't believe this. I cannot believe this is happening right now." Kevin panicked, letting go of Conner and pacing around the room. "That was Arnold. That was my best friend."
Elder Thomas grabbed Kevin's arm. "Shh... If we all just stay together and organized, we can get through this safely."Kevin wiped his eyes and stormed off into his room, shoving Pop Tarts to the side. The other elders just watched this happen in distress and confusion.
"Are we going to be ok?" Oliver asked softly with a puppydog pout on his face.
Chris Thomas sighed. "Yeah." He muttered, sitting down with his head in his hands.Conner's heart was beating out of his chest. He couldn't bare what was going on, he just hoped it was all a bad dream.
He blinked as hard as possible and opened his eyes, expecting to be in his bed. But he wasn't.Kevin burst out of his room, face soaked with tears.
"I'm going after Arnold."
"Are you kidding me?"
"No."
Conner's heart dropped out of his chest. He couldn't just let Kevin go like that.
"I'm... Coming with." He choked out.
Kevin gasped. "Con..."
"I'm. Coming. With."
Kevin didn't want to put Conner in danger, but he couldn't lose Arnold either. He sighed.
"Alright. But stay by my side TWENTY FOUR SEVEN."
Conner nodded. "Ok."
He didn't want to do this. He was terrified. But, he couldn't let Kevin go, so he held in his tears and closed his eyes, trying not to hesitate.
"You guys can't go! We can't let everyone-"
"Well we're going." Kevin insisted, grabbing Conner by the wrist and storming out. He slammed the door and sighed.
"Twenty four seven." He repeated under this breath.
A single tear ran down Conner's cheek.
"Please promise me we'll always stay together." He said softly.Kevin sighed and flashed a sweet smile at Conner. "Don't worry a bit, Con. We've got this."
They set off on their cautious adventure for Arnold, checking everywhere they stepped for danger.
