This used to be a comforting sanctuary, it was home somehow. But since the Morlocks are gone I see this place for what it really is. Dank and repulsive.
I lead the Captain and a few of his S.H.I.E.L.D agents deeper into the tunnels. The further we go the more ominous our surroundings become.
"So who are these missing persons?" I ask while checking to see if everyone is keeping up.
"That is classified information," one of the agents scolds.
The Captain gives the man a wave and smile of reassurance, "the people we are looking for are scientists. We have been tracking agents of Hydra suspected in the involvement of their abduction. They led us here," he said while making his way to my side, "but we can never find anything down here even with the cities blue prints."
"So you're hopin' I'll lead you through some secret passage then?" I spoke while examining a wall to our left. I turn to face the Captain and give him a little grin as I lean back against the wall, fold my arms, and lift my foot backwards. My foot pushes in a block of cement which then forces open a hatch directly above me.
"I am guessing this wasn't on the blue prints," The Captain pondered out loud while scoping out the opening, "What are we waiting for team?"
Before making his way up the pipes and cement ledges to reach the secret tunnel, the Captain offers his hand to me, "Ladies first."
This has to be an act. It would be exhausting to be this nice all the time. I push his hand away and climb up before anyone else offers to help me. How does he think I did it as a child?
Everyone follows me and soon the narrow passage is partially lit by the agents' flash lights. As I crawl along the rough surface of the tunnel, the Captain squeezes through into the small amount of space I have next to me.
"Ah is this the only entrance?" he asks kindly.
I do not know why he is insisting on being nice to me. I haven't really been the nicest person, to be honest I am not sure whether I am capable of it. But I figure it is the best way to avoid getting my heart broken. I wish he would stop being so nice though, "it is the least conspicuous entrance. You still want us to have the element of surprise right?"
"Excellent idea," he almost seemed surprised I would think of that, "um" he continued with uncertainty, "may I ask what your real name is?"
Okay I am not great with conversations. Is this small talk? Is he making small talk with me? "Why do you want to know my real name?" I ask, "what is wrong with 'Marrow'?"
"Oh there is absolutely nothing wrong with the name Marrow," the Captain responded. Maybe he isn't very bothered by the way I have been acting because he is uncomfortable in a place like this, he certainly appears uncomfortable. Unless it is me, "I just feel like real names are more personal. And I would like to at least know the name of the girl I am sharing a crawl space with."
Okay Marrow, this is reality. Someone like him could never fall for someone like me. I really wish he would stop being so nice to me, "it's Sarah."
"Sarah," he smiles, "nice to meet you Sarah."
We reach the end of the tunnel and I can hear some movement and voices on the other side of the broken metal hatch and signal everyone to keep quiet.
"Great job Sarah," the Captain whispered, "by the way. Why don't the Morlocks live down here anymore?"
A shiver of sorrow came over me and I started to feel numb. Now is not the time to be thinking of that, why did he have to ruin it? I take a breath and frown as I give my answer.
"Genocide."
[A/N: Hoping next chapter will be the last and I'll be finished this by tonight! Again, no images or characters are mine. Rights belong to Marvel. I am just playing with them for my story. Poor Marrow. No hail Hydra this time.]
