Jordan woke up startled. He had a bad feeling about today, and couldn't figure out what it was. He walked down the stairs and saw his mom reading the paper, it was barley lit outside, must have been earlier than he thought.
"Come get your things jay we have to go to the SCND (Safety center for natural disasters) "
"But mom it's so early, and I'm so hungry" he groaned
His mom gave him a stern look and he obeyed. Jordan ran up the stairs and went into his room. In his closet was the little back pack he used for emergencies. Quickly he threw in some clothes, a flashlight, water bottle, bandaids, and rope. Jordan didn't understand why he had to do these things but he didn't dare ask his mother. A few minutes later his dad came in for a final bag check and they were off. The roads were crowded today, everyone seemed to be headed the same way he was.
They crossed over the bridge and drove past the big lake. Such a pretty lake it was, the sparkling of it from the sun, the little splashes of the fish and the sweet cool feel of the water. How Jordan wished he could live right beside it. Such sweet thoughts in his head caused him to nod off, before being jolted awake by the quick slam of the breaks.
"WHAT WAS THAT!!"
The thought echoed in his head, but he couldn't seem to linger on the thought much longer before it was pushed out of his head by a loud siren. It whacked and cried out with taking a rest.
"We are almost there guys, hold on a little longer" His mom screamed, being barley audible over the loud siren. Once they reached the SCND he popped out of the car and waited on the bench for his mother and father to unpack. On the way in he was stopped by a police officer and scanned, as usual. But this time the little warning light went off.
"Sir. I'm going to have to ask you to step aside"
How he felt ('Д`)
How he acted ¯\_(ツ)_/¯Jordan stepped aside and spread out like a starfish. The officer waved his wand all over until it got close to Jordan's pocket. As the wand went over his pocket again and again the Alarm went off.
"Sir, please empty your pockets"
Jordan, with his hands shaking, reached into his pocket and pulled out a necklace. The officer examined it and cleared it as safe.
"False alarm everyone please continue"
Jordan looked around amazed. He didn't notice how many people were watching him. "What did they expect to see?" He thought, "I'm not a mass murderer or anything"
He continued walking in with his parents and they found a small, cream colored room with a few mats on the floor, a blue fridge in the corner, lights, chairs, books, and a red button in the middle of the left wall. He put his stuff down and laid down on a mat. It felt the same as last time.
"Momma, what's the button for again?"
"Only if something bad happens and we need help, so don't touch it ok?"
"Beeeepp"
They all directed their attention to the tv on the wall. Jordan didn't understand most of the political stuff, but he did understand the weather.
"Everyone please take cover in emergency departments, a strong earthquake is expected this afternoon"
"So that's why everyone is here" Jordan thought, "an earthquake"
"Daddy, did everyone get this warning on the tv, so everyone is safe"
"I'm pretty sure, most people have a tv or radio somewhere in their house"
Jordan felt better now, he closed his eyes, got comfortable, and thought about the last play date he went on with Sarah. All the fun they had, building things, drawing, tag. It played in his head like a memory:
"Hey Jordan, wanna right a song?"
"Hmm, I dunno it sounds hard, let's go watch tv for some an idea"
"We can't do that, my mommy took away the tv, she said its bad for our brains"
Jordan opened his eyes
She took away the tv
Took away the tv
Away the tv
He bolted upright, they didn't have a tv. Just as he was going to tell his mom, everything started to shake.
