Chapter 1

"Kyrie!" I heard my father's deep voice boom throughout the house as I sat on the bed tying my shoes.

"You better be up and ready in ---" He paused when he saw me fully dressed staring at him from my bed with a blank face.

"I'm ready whenever you are." My voice lacked emotion.

He looked at me with confusion evident on his smooth brown face before turning and walking away.

I got up from my bed and walked over to my full length mirror to look at myself one last time. My school had uniforms which consisted of a black collared shirt and khaki pants.

'God I hate these uniforms,' I heard Aiyanna. I agreed with her for once. I had decided to give the voice a name since I doubted she would be going  anywhere anytime soon.

"We actually agree on something," I responded while spraying on some cologne. Grabbing my bag and a hoodie I was ready to go.

On my way to the front door, I saw my parents in the kitchen all hugged up and loving on each other.

'It's nice to see that they're capable of love. They just don't give any to you.' I could tell she was grinning from the tone of her voice.

I said nothing in response and continued making my way to the front door.

"You ready?" my father asked as he made it to tge front door. I nodded as I looked him up and down. He had begun letting himself go. He was still handsome with his smooth, brown complexion and dark eyes. He was just round now. Him being 5'8 made it no better.

He said nothing else as we walked out the door and made our way to the car.

The drive to school was like every other morning.

Silent.

No words spoken between us. No radio to counter it. Just the sound of us driving along the bumby road to my school.

'He never talks. Never shows us any emotion. He thinks we're a failure. He'll learn, though.'

I rolled my eyes at her and her ramblings. She always says things like that. Nothing ever happens. Nothing ever can. She's only a figment of my imagination.

The car stops and I notice we had made it to my school. I got out of the car and could barely get the door closed before he pulled off.

'Have a good day, Kai. I'll see you when I get home, Kai. I LOVE YOU, KAI!' Aiyanna's tone was sarcastic as we watched our father drive away.

'He will regret this.'

"And just what do you mean by that?" I asked.

'Nothing that concerns you at the moment.'

Before I could I heard the voice of a teacher telling me to get inside of the barbed wire gate that surrounded the two story school.

I did as I was told and walked on campus. I forgot about what Aiyanna had just said as I heard the bell ring for class.

'It's probably nothing.'

*************

Last period finally rolled around after a long and borring day. Jermaine wasn't here today, so that meant no gym and no ride home.

'Guess I'm taking the bus,' I thoyght just as the bell rang.

I walked out of class and made my way to the bus line. Aiyanna had been unusually quiet today. That was part of the reason for my boredom. She was entertaining to listen to.

'Thank God it's Friday,' I thought as I saw my bus pull up. I found a seat all the way in the back and plugged in my headphones to drown the world around me out. Before I knew it I was home.

No one was home when I got inside. It didn't bother me. I was used to being left alone.

I decided that I would take a nap since I had no homework and Aiyanna was finally being quiet for once. Grabbing a bottle of water, I made my way back to my room.

As I took off my pants and got under my covers, I got this feeling. It was one of dread. Like those feelings you get right before something bad happens.

"It's nothing," I told myself before turning off my lamp and laying down. I had always been an axious person. I shook the feeling off as I closed my eyes and drifted to sleep.

My dreams were peaceful for the first time in a long time.

"Kyrie! Kyrie wake up!"

The voice of a loud hysterical woman woke me up from my sleep. I looked up to see my mother sobbing uncontrollably into the arms of a man in a police uniform.

There were about five of them in my room and they all had somber expressions on their faces.

"Mama? What happened?" My voice came out weary.

One of the officers answered for her because she couldn't stop crying so hard.

"Kyrie, is it?" she asked. "I'm sorry to have to tell you this, but your father was murdered."

"Murdered?!" I don't think I heard her right.

"His barber shop was burned down not two hours ago. Someone baracaded the door with him and five other people inside. I'm very sorry for your loss."

As I processed what she had just told me, I was shocked to find that I felt nothing. Not sadness, anger, grief. Not even the numbness I'd heard people say they felt when they recieved news like this.

Just nothing.

Aiyanna decided to make her grand reappearance with a statement that made all my emotions hit me at once.

'I told you he would regret it.' She sounded serine. Peaceful. Terrifying.

The room started to spin. It was too much for me to hamdle. I didn't even try to stop the darkness from taking me over.

'At least I'm in a bed,' was my last thought before I lost conciousness.
