The last thing she saw was Adonis crumple to the ground after Bryice had swiped at him with his sword. She didn't see him get up. She didn't know if he was well.
King Poseidon dragged Rani along throughout the kelp forest, her mind racing with different scenarios about what might have happened to Adonis.
"Daddy, slow down!" Rani cried as she struggled to keep up with her agitated father. His scornful eye watched her every move as she attempted to compose herself.
"What are the people going to think if you, Rani?" Poseidon asked her. "You ran away from your responsibilities. From your own people."
Rani's heart sank as her father showered her with scarring words, eating away at her heart every second. It hurt knowing this was how he felt. Rani knew he would never understand why she did what she did and how she truly feels about Adonis.
"Bryice, if Adonis is dead because of you, you will not see the light of the sun ever again. And I will personally make sure Hades makes your afterlife a living hell." Rani sneered quietly at Bryice. He snickered and leaned in real close to Rani.
"I'm already living in hell, sweetheart." He grinned devilishly. She attempted to hit him but Poseidon restrained his daughter, pulling her closer to him.
"Rani, Bryice has helped us in ways you wouldn't even know existed. Can you at least be kind to him?" Poseidon asked his daughter. She glared at the ignorant merman.
"You don't see what I see, Father." Rani hissed silently. The sea god nodded his head thoughtfully.
"Very well." was all he said. "This is just making your life more miserable, Daughter."
As the Royal party reached the outskirts of the kingdom, Rani noticed all the merpeople she passed were glaring at her. The betrayed look they had in their eyes was exactly the way her father looked at her when she told him of Adonis. Her heart sank, this wasn't how she wanted any of this to happen.
The algae covered golden gates of the Atlantian palace opened, revealing the servants and guards all waiting in the garden courtyard. Her three sisters rushed from behind the Elite guards and hugged their father and Rani.
"Your sisters missed you, Ranessa." Poseidon told her as she hung her head.
As the Elite guards took Rani from the courtyard, she couldn't help but look up and notice the sun shining through the layers of the sea, casting a glow on the palace.
Everything seemed in place since the day she left. The tapestries hung untouched, the gold along the hallways glimmered, and the stone floor still algae infested. The guards steered her among familiar hallways, she studied every crack in the stone, every spot on the gold statues, knowing this would be the last time she would ever see the palace again. She knew her father and she knew Bryice. He would convince the king to keep her locked in her chambers, telling him it would be reckless otherwise. She would just run away again. And she would.
As Rani reached her room, guards were posted on the outside of her door, she was right. Her father and Bryice had made sure she would never escape again. She buried her face in the silk of her bedspread, hoping Adonis would find her as he promised.
