Envy is a resentment which "occurs when someone lacks another's quality, achievement or possession and wishes that the other lacked it."
As one of the Seven Deadly Sins, Envy clouds your heart and clenches tight while whispering sweet nothings of wants and should haves. It hurts; hurts to the point of madness when you can't achieve what you think is rightfully yours. Since you're hurt and unhappy by your own Envy, you find it necessary to hurt others because they're happy with something you wish to seek. Almost like you want to absorb all the things you want from them and then just leave them high and dry- you got what you wanted.
One thing that helps me with my Envy is knowing that grass is never greener on the other side. Although it may LOOK greener it likely is not. Looks can be very deceiving. Knowing that, think about what you are THANKFUL for and be appreciative of what you have now. Even though you didn't get what that other person got doesn't mean you aren't less than them; different things happen to different people.
It'll be tough but just know that you are in life for a reason and the time will come when that happiness you seek will appear; as long as you strive for it.
"Happiness is not something ready made. It comes from your own actions."
-Dalai Lama
