Isaac was sitting in front of the computer in his bedroom doing what he convinced himself most boys his age did in front of a computer (with his door shut of course): streaming the next season of Naruto. His mum would bludgeon him to death if she found out he still hadn't done his homework, but regardless, Isaac liked to think of himself as someone who lived life on the edge.
"Isaac? Love? I'm quickly heading out, but I'll be back around six," his mum said with her head peeking through his now open door.
"Okay mum," he replied innocently, hoping his tone would distract her from the fact that he was, evidently, not doing his homework.
"Love you!" she said and before leaving added "and do your homework!"
"Love you too mum!"
He had two hours to continue "living life on the edge"; an hour and a half, minus the thirty minutes for homework. Yep, this 11-year-old boy was badass! He didn't bother with wondering where his mother could've been headed - probably work he thought to himself. Andrea Berkovich was a homemaker in its literal and figurative sense. She was an interior designer who worked from home and every now and then she had meetings with clients, so it wasn't too odd for him to be left home alone for a couple of hours. He assumed this was one of those occasions.
Isaac was completely enamoured by his progressive anime addiction and found it to be the most annoying thing ever when the telephone started to ring and he had to pause his computer screen to go and answer it, all the way outside of his bedroom in the passage.
"Uh Berkovich residence, hello?" he attempted to mimic the tone his mother had when she answered the phone.
"Hi Zach, it's mum. Why aren't you picking up your cell?"
As an only child with parents who were relatively well off, Isaac always had the coolest gadgets upon release. His parents made sure to take a modest approach at it, so he always earned these gadgets in the form of doing well in school. The most recent addition to his "Cool Techie Devices" collection was the iPhone 3 which was a reflection of a grade average of 92% on his most recent report.
"Sorry, I think it's on silent."
Now the iPhone was great, grand, spectacular even with its extended battery life and pre-installed iOS 4; Isaac could download and play all the games he wanted! The fact that the thing could make and receive calls and texts didn't spark his interests as much.
"That's alright love. Listen, mummy needs you to get yourself ready cause I'm gonna be home in about 30 minutes and we're heading out for dinner with your dad."
"Are we celebrating something?"
"Yeah, we are honey."
"Oh, awesome!" He figured it was a new client.
After hanging up the phone, Isaac decided that the adventures with Naruto would have to resume the following day and he scribbled through the few pages of homework that he had. He then took a quick bath and dressed himself in clothes his mother deemed dinner worthy, getting finished in time to watch the last 9 minutes of the episode he had previously been watching before his mother arrived. Her version of thirty minutes was actually forty-five.
