Chapter 9:
"If you fall I'll catch you if the world comes at you, you can always run to me, I'll be your hiding place, and if the stars burn out of the sky, and your heart lost its light, just never let me go, and I'll scare your fears away. Yeah I'll be your hiding place." -Hedley
Tuesday night when the kids were all sleeping I went to Lilly and Katie's bedroom. Ashley had been sleeping in there since Lilly was born, about six years ago. I walked down the creepy hallway and stood in the doorway. She was on her phone, like always. I crossed my arms, and leaned against the side of the door. I wanted to get out of the hallway, I've hated it since I was a kid.
"Hey." I said.
She jumped and looked up at me. "You scared the shit out of me!"
I walked into the small room. The only objects in the room were a bed, a dresser, a hutch and a TV. "Sorry."
"What's up? Are the kids giving you a hard time?" She asked. Lilly came up with the idea of them all sleeping in the living room with me. TJ wouldn't sleep away from me, and that meant Lilly and Katie wouldn't sleep away from me. I'm lucky I convinced them to sleep on the floor instead of all on the couch with me.
"No, they're all passed out surprisingly." I smiled. "I was wondering if you could watch TJ for me tomorrow. I promised a friend I would visit."
She frowned. "You're leaving already?"
"No, I will just be gone for the day. I'll be back late tomorrow." I leaned back against the dresser.
"The girls are going to be upset. Why can't you bring TJ with you?" She put her phone down.
"He wants to see the girls, and I don't want to put him in the car again after we just got out." Alex walked into the room grinding his teeth. I cringed. I hated that noise. He climbed onto the bed and pulled the blanket away from Ashley. I swear this child never slept!
"What time are you leaving?" She asked fighting Alex for the blanket.
"It's a six hour drive, I want to leave about six to get there at noon."
"Six hours?! Where are you going?" She stopped fighting him and let him have the entire blanket.
I shrugged. "I told you I'm going to see a friend."
She sighed. "Yeah you know I don't mind watching TJ, he's a lot better behaved then the girls."
"They're good, they are just showing off. Don't let TJ misbehave, and if he does tell me."
"I will. Have fun."
I walked to the doorway. "Thanks."
I walked out. God I hate this hallway! I'm not going to run down it. I'm not going to run down it. There is nothing behind me, it's all in my head. I took a couple steps towards the living room, and the feeling intensified. Screw it. I ran the rest of the way into the living room.
I walked into the kitchen and grabbed my pillow. I put it on the couch. My dad was passed out on the couch, with his plate on his lap. Nine out of ten times he fell asleep while eating. One of the kitten was making its way onto his plate. "Do you have a death wish?" I whispered, grabbed it and put it on the floor.
