CHAPTER 1~ZOE'S POV~
I sat there bored, nothing to do, just staring outside the window waiting for something exciting to happen. Usually this little unknown coffee shop was quiet with only a few people here chatting or gossiping about the latest fashion, new movies or the hottest new boy bands or actors.
I was playing on my phone looking up once in a while to see if anyone was in front of the counter and served a few people. I stood up to serve an old lady who came to this little coffee shop regularly, whose name was Valerie.
I placed the money she handed in the cash machine and turned to make some tea for Valerie. She was a really nice lady, always telling me stories about her family, and asking me questions about mine.
She was probably the most motherly figure in my life. I didn't have either of my parents, as they died in a car accident whilst I was only fourteen. I did have my brother, Lyndon, who was two years older than me, and had brought me up. When I was at school, I had a nice group of friends, who were good and never got into trouble. I'm not nerdy but I'm not in with the popular crowd either.
I walked over to Valerie, placing down the tray which held the small tea pot, tea cup and a plate of cake.
"Here you go Valerie." I said politely.
"Thank you my dear." She said, leaning over to take the teapot.
I turned round to walk back to the counter to see the owner of the coffee shop, Sophie, standing there, serving a customer.
"You're good to go now." Sophie said nicely. I nodded and turned to take my apron off, placing it on the hook and grabbing my bag, walking out of the coffee shop.
It was quite dark out because it was winter and the sky always started to get dark early. I wrapped my coat around me tighter, hugging my body to save warmth. Eventually, it began to rain, and my coat was the opposite to waterproof. The rain was hard and getting heavier every step I took.
All of a sudden there was a big flash in the sky, followed by a load roar of thunder. Great. Just my luck. I started to run, which was a bad idea.
I slipped over on the concrete pavement, crashing to the floor, and cutting my leg open. Could this get any worse?
I stood up and limped over to sit in a hollow part of a wall which had been knocked in. Looking down at my small body, I noticed I had three cuts all down my right leg dripping with blood, a graze on my left knee, and another cut on my left elbow.
Great.
I pulled my phone out, texting Lyndon to pick me up. While I waited, I looked back down at my leg which was still dripping with blood. I didn't even have any tissues with me and my jeans were ripped.
My brothers car pulled up and I got in, sniffing and shaking from the wet cold.
"What happened?" He asked, his eyebrows furrowing.
"I fell over."
He chuckled slightly at my clumsiness, and promised to fix me up once we got back.
As soon as I got home, I jumped straight into the shower. I washed myself, making my cuts sting even more.
I got out and pulled my hair up into a messy bun as I couldn't be bothered to dry it, and got changed into some sweats. I quickly made myself a cup of tea and sat down on my sofa, using the mug to warm up my hands.
As I flickered through TV channels, Lyndon sat next to me, gently wiping my cuts with wipes and sticking plasters on them.
"They're only minor, stop fussing." I grinned.
