However odd it may seem, this is a great way to work on character development.

Step One:
Pick one of your characters. Particularly one you want to develop further.

Step Two:
Create the scene by imagining an empty elevator. Any type of elevator will do; hotel, business, industrial.

Step Three:
Pick another person. It can be anyone. Here are some examples if you're drawing a blank:
God, Donald Trump, Oprah Winfrey, your mother, Katniss Everdeen, Leonardo DiCaprio, the devil, your grandpa, George Washington, a character from another story you wrote, Shakespeare, Superman, Sherlock Holmes...

Step Four:
Now imagine those two characters are stuck in that elevator together, and start writing! Really think about how your character would react in the presence of the other person and how they would handle the situation. Would they be fighting, or working together? Would your character know who the other is, or would they be complete strangers? What possible conflicts could occur?

This may seem pointless, but it's a very creative way to get you really thinking about your character. Even if being stuck in an elevator has nothing to do with your story. It will get you thinking about ideas you never though about before that can make all the difference when writing your story.

Remember, dull, underdeveloped characters will just drag your story down.
