Relating your story to significant things in your life is important. It keeps you curious about exploring different aspects of your writing, and keeps you motivated to continue writing.

Think about your story. How could you relate it to your life? How could you make it truly seem real to you?

Remember, if it doesn't seem "real" to you as an author, it won't seem "real" to your readers. Your story could be about magical unicorns on an alien planet, something that is sure never to happen, but you still need to write as if it's real life.

One thing I recommend doing is finding specific connections that exist in our world that also apply to your story. Look at different songs, poems, writings of any kind really. Find ones that remind you of your writing.

For example, let's say I am writing a story about an orphaned child who is trying to find her parents. A song that could relate to my story would be Faded by Alan Walker. It doesn't directly talk about an orphaned child, but the lyrics can relate to my story if I choose to look at them in that light.

Choose writing that you like to relate to your story. That way, you'll stay interested. Every time you read that poem, or listen to that song, it will inspire you to keep writing.
