Two months ago I was on spring vacation of my senior year.  My mom, dad, and younger sister Bree, and I were going to go to California to get away from the harsh, cold Minnesota winter.  It was the last day of school before break officially started and we got assigned a huge research paper due on our first day back.

"Damn it," I vented to Adrian as he walked me to my house after school, "how am I supposed to work on this over break?!  Stupid teachers! Why do they feel the need to torture us?!"

"Are you done with your self-pity parade yet?" Adrian laughed.

"No," I smiled back

"Alright, go on" He was laughing even harder now.

"Why, ughhhhhhhhhhhhh!" I screamed to no one in particular.  Maybe the world in general.

By that point we had reached my house and said our goodbyes.  I knew he'd be waiting for me when I got back.  I slammed the door shut in frustration.  My mom came running in to see what had me worked up.

"Upset?" she said gently.

I had made up my mind about this, "Mom I can't go to," I replied.

"Delilah what do you mean?"

"Our STUPID teachers assigned a huge research paper I have to work on over break. Mom, I'm really sorry."  I said to her sorrowfully.

"Oh its ok peach pie," her nickname for me.  Sour and sweet. "We understand, school comes first."

I walked out with them to finish loading their bags in the minivan.  "What will you do while we are gone?" Bree questioned eagerly.

"Oh homework," Bree and I had always been close so we talked to each other about everything. ", but I promise I'll be waiting here the moment you get home." I said as I planted that last kiss I would ever give her on her head.

Little did I know that they would never come home.

They drove off and I walked back inside.  I looked at the itinerary they had left sitting on the counter.  Flight 5603. I headed upstairs to do start the paper that had kept me home in the first place.

Two hours had gone by and I was done for the night so I made my nightly coffee, turned off the lights and settled on the couch to watch the news like I often did every night.

BREAKING NEWS, flashed across the screen and I eagerly watched to see what had happened.  "Flight 5603 has gone down in flames right after sending a distress signal seconds earlier.  There will be no survivors. Now back to your regularly scheduled program." The remote dropped out of my hand as I spiraled into an abyss of my own screams.

"What," my voice trembled.  "BREE!" I screamed, "SAVE THEM YOU WORTHLESS IDIOTS!" I yelled. "No this isn't real, this isn't happening," nothing felt real it was as if I was stuck in a dream I would never wake up from.

Ding ding, the doorbell went off. "GET AWAY, LEAVE ME ALONE!" I screamed to the unknown visitor.

"Delilah it's me," Adrian's voice came from the other side of the door.

I crawled to the door, unlocked the dead bolt, and slumped to the floor.  Adrian pushed his way inside to find me a lifeless heap on the floor. I looked up at him with my vision blurred by my tears.  "Why, WHAT DID I DO!? Why God why?"

That's when the world went black.
