Syllables(eum-jeol음절)
A syllable is the basic unit in Korean Language(Hangug-eo 한국어). It is a block of letters which consist of at least 1 consonant and 1 vowel. First letter of every syllable should be a consonant followed by a vowel and may or may not be followed by another consonant which is called patch'im (받침) or the final consonant of the syllable.
Examples:
ㄴ(n)+ㅏ(a) = 나(na, means I)
ㄴ(n)+ㅓ(eo) = 너(neo, means you)
ㄱ(g)+ㅡ(eu)=그(geu, means that)For vertical vowels, it is always placed on the right of the first consonant while for horizontal vowels it is placed below the first consonant.
Korean words are composed of 1 or more syllables. Here are some basic words to exercise your knowledge on Hangeul(한글):
하다(ha-da, meaning "to do")
가다(ga-da, meaning "to go")
사다(sa-da, meaning "to buy")
먹다(meok-da, meaning "to eat")
마시다(ma-si-da, meaning "to drink")
밥(bap, meaning "Cooked Rice")
물(mul, meaning "water")Now try to read the following syllables:
