Special Cases

When reading Hangeul, 받침can be affected by the succeeding consonants . You may encounter these cases along the way so it will be discussed here to avoid confusion.


Case #1. "" consonant
If the preceding syllable has a받침 and the next syllable has as the initial consonant, the succeeding syllable will inherit the 받침.

Example:
할아버지
ha-ra-beo-ji
Meaning: grandfather


Notice that instead of reading it as har-a-beo-ji, the consonant inherit the consonant of the preceding syllable. Practice your writing skills by copying the word on the spaces provided.


Case #2. Silent consonant
Some consonants will become silent then the succeeding syllable will inherit the 받침.

Example:
맛있다
ma-shi-tta
Meaning: delicious



Notice that the consonant wasn't read and then it inherits the consonant . Practice your writing skills by copying the word on the spaces provided.

Case #3. Evolving consonant
Preceding syllable may evolve to match the first consonant of the next syllable.

Example:
감사합니다
Gam-sa-ham-ni-da
Meaning: Thank You
