Chapter 2

When my alarm goes off on Monday morning I just want to crawl deeper into my covers and sleep the day away.  All I could hear last night was Nate’s dad, Charlie, yelling at Mark about how he was being completely irresponsible and he has become such a complete disappointment to him and why in the world  he couldn’t be more like Nate.  Ouch.  A few minutes later I hear someone go up on the roof and just break down.  Question is, was it Mark or Nathan?

By the time I’m dressed and fed, I hear Nathan pull up outside.  I run around and gather my stuff together. Without saying good-bye to my mom ( not that she’d notice) I start pulling on my other Sperry and run out the door

“Hey,” I say breathlessly.  He laughs at my disgruntled look, obviously amused.

“What? Have to run a marathon to get here? Oh wait, I got it.  You couldn’t live without me for another second, so you just had to get out here as quickly as you could.  Am I right?”

    “Oh ha-ha,” I say sarcastically.

“Just drive”

“Hey, be nice because if it weren’t for me, you’d be riding on the bus with Mikey Hobart or some other weird kid.”

“Oh yes, however would I survive?” I put my hand to my head and fake swoon.

“Okay no need to be rude.  You know I’d still give you a ride to school even if...”

“ ‘I let a pack of rabid clowns eat you’ ? Yes I think we’ve already discussed this,” I say with a satisfied smirk.

He rolls his eyes as we pull into the parking lot. I glance at the clock on the dashboard. it read 8:00. Technically, students could get fined by campus security for showing up late (stupid I know) but I knew we didn’t have to worry since his uncle was the superintendent of the school.

“Tell me.  Why do we bother with coming to school?” I ask.

“Well,” he says, “ It’s so we can better our education and not end up having to state ‘Would you like fries with that?’ ”

I start doing that weird snort-laugh which makes us laugh harder.

    “Hey Nate!”

We both turn around and see Holly, the most popular girl in school, fast walk her way up to us.  Nathan waves at her and starts to walk away.  She wedges herself in between us while I try to suppress a laugh.

“Excuse me,” she says snottily, “I need to talk to Nate.”

I just stare at her faking a stupid look to tick her off.   She sighs dramatically then says, “Alone.”

I throw my hands up and  walk ahead alittle but too far so that I’m able to still hear their conversation.

Not only is Nate the smartest guy in our school, he’s also the most popular. At least, to everybody else’s standards.  The girls are always giving me dirty looks like I’m that one obstacle that stands in their way of perfection.  Girls are always trying to strike up a conversation, whether it be about sports, which he hates, gossip, which he never keeps up with, or movies.  To be honest, the only girls he ever talks to are Jo and me.  I guess girls just haven’t figured that out yet.

“So Nate, I uh, was wondering if you could help me with my algebra homework.  I just don’t understand it,” she says.

Here comes my favorite part.

He arches his eyebrow

    “Okay?  What don’t you understand?”

“Uh... the letters! “ she answers quickly which makes Nathan jump.  I put my fist in my mouth so I can keep from laughing.
