Prologue--- Kenzie's eyes widened as Tory told her her test result. "That's....that's impossible," she said, waving Tory off. Tory rolled her eyes. "Seriously, why do you all keep saying that? It's possible, just rare," she told her. Kenzie was pushed out the door and she ran back to her house.Kenzie's day was boring which gave her a bunch of time to think of her result. She couldn't believe that Divergents were real, let alone her being one. After the day was done she had not even made her decision. She just slept with the slightest frown on her face.
The next day at the testing her name was the first to be called and she nearly started crying. She slowly walked up to the front of the room with her hands behind her back. She hesitantly picked up the knife and cut a small slice in her palm. Her eyes pricked with tears, she'd never really and truly felt pain.
Her hands shook and a drop of blood was almost spilt in the Candor faction, but she just closed her eyes and silently placed her hand over Dauntless, feeling ashamed that he hadn't felt any pain and wanted to prove herself. She always thought in the moment so she did not really think of the future.
Chapter 1--- Kenzie's P.O.V
The sky was beautiful today, but I never got time to really notice it. Eric was showing us the fear room. His drawling voice carried over the small room. I was hunched up in the corner picking at my fingernails."Kenz," a familiar voice said. My eyes widened. I'd been discovered. All the students turned to me and I raised my eyes and lowered my hands. "Want to be our first volunteer?" Eric asked me, smirking. I silently cursed at him. "Sure," I said, sweetly.
Four hooked me up the the machine and all the students left. "You want me to stay or Eric?" Four asked. I looked at Eric then at Four. "Eric I guess," I said, feeling confident in myself. Four just smirked and walked out of the room. I looked at the floor shyly, but Eric had that weird face again.
I just could understand what emotion it was. Amusement, is he planning something evil, maybe even love, but I just couldn't tell. As a Candor I should be able to tell if he was lying of showing signs of lying, but I've never been good at that anyways.
He had me drink yet another serum then he gently laid my head down. I was very surprised at his gentleness, but I just looked down. "Do you best," he mumbled and then I was trapped in the new scenery.
It was a crazy town. People were yelling, screaming, and running around in all directions. I saw a huge fire with people lumping into it, screaming. The sun was down and faces were lit up by the fire, mostly the ones closest to the fire. There were looters, killers, and many many innocent people who were crazily jumping into the blazing fire.
My eyes were teary and wet from crying and I tried to wipe them with my sleeve, but I realized I was tied to a post. Now I was really crying. I had to stand he and watch this madness as it all played out. My arms were aching from being tied to the post. I tried so hard to get free, but it just would budge.
I was full on sobbing now and hoping someone would be ever so kind to free me, but there's that catch. In the real world at least someone in this crazy town would notice me, but no one did. 'This isn't real' I told myself, trying hard not to start crying again.
The scenery changed and now I saw nothing, my eyes glued shut. I couldn't open my eyes. I felt a hand on my face, but I couldn't see it. The hand was callused, but soft at the same time. I squirmed under the grasp of this person, who I presumed was a man. The man slapped me hard on the face and I cried out in pain, but nothing was heard. I was mute as well. My heart sank and I knew I had to do something.
The man had worked his way behind me and whispered something in my ear, but I didn't hear anything I just felt his presence on my shoulder. I realized again, I was deaf. I started crying again, but the man did not do anything. He just kept his anonymous face near my shoulder breathing on my neck. I couldn't handle this anymore so I just took a deep shaky breath and punched the man in the face.
Once again, I felt a change in scenery. I could now open my eyes and move and even here the beatific sound of cars and firetrucks. I really did not want to open my eyes to watch or feel or experience another horrible test so I closed my eyes and knelt down, sitting on my knees. "I want to go back," I said out loud.
Suddenly, I was back in the testing room with a very surprised Eric standing a few feet away from me. I blushed realizing he had seem everything. I ran my fingers through my hair. "How'd you get free of the post?" I shrugged.
"I stated the not so obvious," I mumbled, but he heard me and laughed. Before he lead me out of the room, he turned me around gently by the shoulders to face him. "I know what you are. You are Divergent, but I like you so I won't go crazy one you," he said, firmly.
I recovered from my shock and nodded then started to walk out, but he pulled me back and into his broad chest. "I really like you," he said. His face was leaning in before I had time to register what was happening, but I kissed back nevertheless.
