The backyard

Prologue

I drive back to my house. I pull up into the driveway. Thankfully, my mom isn't home.
I pull the keys out the ignition and get out of my car. I find my house key and unlock my door. I put all my things on the kitchen table and walk to the back of the house.
I pull open the back door and walk out into my backyard. I feel a moment of happiness and also sadness.
I missed Niall.
I think about the memories we shared when we were kids. Running, screaming, jumping, laughing, and talking about random things.
I sit on the swing and recall summer 2006.
I walked outside pulling Niall by the arm.
"Where are we going?" He questions.
"The same place we always go?" I smile.
I look behind me and see that his and my mom are sitting on the chairs, chatting. Like they always do when we hang out.
We get behind a tree and sit down.
I look at him and see something I've never seen in his eyes before.
"What's wrong?" I ask him, breaking the silence.
"Kristina, there's something I need to tell you." He looks up at me. Worry in his eyes.
"What?" I ask.
He takes my hands. "Promise me we will always be best friends, no matter what." He says the last word like its the last thing he's going to say to me.
"I promise." I say back. "Can you tell me what's wrong?"
"We are, um leaving."
"What? What do you mean you're leaving?" My heart starts to hurt.
"I don't know. My mom told me they missed Dublin."
I look down. Tears start to form in my eyes.
"I'll miss you. A lot."
I look at him. "Are you coming back? At least to visit me?" I ask.
"Maybe, I don't know. I'll try to convince my mom and dad to visit."
I start to say something but his mom interrupts me.
"Niall! We are leaving. Now!" His mom shouts. What?
He gets up and runs back to his mom. I run after him.
"Wait!" I yell.
He stops and turns around. He's crying.
I go up to him and hug him. He hugs back, but tighter.
"Never forget me. Alright?" He voice cracks.
"Alright." I respond, tears filling my eyes.
"Here." He takes my hand and hands me something. Before I can see what it is he closes my hand.
"Keep this." He whispers in my ear.
Then he walks away. His mom closes the door behind her, but harshly.
I stand there. Eventually I open my hand and see a necklace. It has the word 'forever' on it and has a heart at the bottom.
Tears run down my face. I run inside and head to the front door. I open the door and stand on my porch. I see them drive away. I catch a glimpse of Niall, in the backseat, crying.
That was the last time I ever saw him in person.
I get up from the swing, wiping the tears from my face.
I head upstairs and go into my room. I go over to my dresser and open the first drawer. It's the only thing in there.
