October 31st. Halloween. The one day of the year that I dread the most. Why? Well, for starters, this is the day my brother died of brain cancer. And secondly, all of these teenage girls go out in their booty shorts and crop tops and call it a costume. I mean, come one, you're 14. You don't need to show that much skin.
Anyways, what was I saying? Oh, yeah. It was Halloween. And that year, my best friend Lexi was going to try and convince me to like Halloween. She somehow believed that taking me trick-or-treating would make me like Halloween. She was horribly wrong.
I heard the doorbell ring and ran to the mudroom. I open the door to find Lexi in a batgirl costume. "Ugh, do we have to go tonight? I'm feeling kinda sick," I say as I rub my belly.
"Cut the crap, Jess. I'm making you go. Now go get your costume on and let's have some fun!" I trudged my way upstairs and put on my superwoman costume. By the time I got back downstairs, Lexi already had two Hello Kitty buckets for us to store candy in.
"Lexi, we're 14. Do we really need those?" I ask.
"What else are we supposed to put our candy in?" Lexi and I finally step out the door, and I immediately began to regret everything.
We started at our neighbors house, getting nothing but a few apples. Lexi states, "What a fabulous way to start off out night." After about an hour or so, we go to her house and she gets in her car.
"Hey, what are you doing?" I ask, worried.
"Get in. I want to show you something." I hop in the vehicle and we start driving. After about 15 minutes we pull into a trail that leads into the woods. I begin to get even more worried.
"Alexis, if this is a joke, it really isn't funny."
"Just shut up, we're almost there." After another 15 minutes of driving through the woods, we reach a gigantic tree with a huge hole in it. Lexi jumps out of the car.
"What the hell are you doing? Are you crazy?" I scream from the car.
Lexi seemed totally calm. "Get over here now. I brought you here because I think that you can help them." At this point, I got out of the car and walked over to her.
"What? Who are you talking about? I'm gonna go now, Lexi. Thanks for trying to make this fun and all, but it obviously isn't working." I started to walk away but she grabbed my shoulder and yanked me back.
"Now you listen to me." She pointed to the hole. "There are people down there, and they have a world, and you're the only thing that can save them from being destroyed. So you can either trust me, or go back home. It's your call." And with that, Lexi jumped into the hole, never to return.
