Ryan put Liam's grave last because he was the last to die in that battle. He had fought bravely, but also payed the price of war.
The other graves said Div, Newt, Nick, Adam, Christa, Violet, Liam. The other beta's he barely knew, even though he had a whole freaking year to memorize their names and at least talk to them. Void and Allison were behind him as he placed Liam's. "He was a good kid." Void said. "Kinda miss him now."
"I miss Div. . ." Allison's face was red and soaked with tears. "And everyone else. Now that they're all dead. . .We have nothing."
"We do have something." Ryan blurted. He stood up, and turned to face both of them. "We have hope and courage that none of this will ever happen again, and enough hope to know that there are other people out there, other werewolves, vampires, etcetera who would stop at nothing to make this planet safe again."
Void nodded, and so did Allison, who wiped her face, and then cried a bit more, then stopped altogether. "That's true, Ryan." He said. "That, my friend, is very true."
Ryan took one last look at the graves he'd placed with the carved names in them, and followed the two away from the cabin. Away from the ARK, away from the basement. . .
Away from the pond. . .where it all started.
