"What happened?" Dakota demanded, right after we explained that we lost her sister.
"We just told you." I replied, confused. This was an odd situation. And that's saying something with the lives we live.
"But what really happened?" She lost me there. "You guys had to have said something. Maybe she was just upset...or slightly confused. She'll come back after she's cleared her head." She sounded like she was just trying to reassure herself now.
"Koda, she didn't know who we were." Sam offered cautiously.
"Or her own name." I added, receiving a nod from Sam.
She had been pacing the living room of her apartment and now stopped to glance up at us. "What does this mean?" She looked terrified.
"We don't know." Sam admitted. "That's what we're trying to figure out." This answer didn't satisfy the distraught girl, though, because she began pacing again, this time biting her nails.
"What am I gonna tell my parents? It's been hard enough covering up the fact that she's been in a coma for nearly two months."
"What exactly have you been telling them?" It had to be one hell of a cover up for it to have worked this long.
"That she got a job abroad and immerses herself in her work so she barely has time to talk to people." She answered with a grimace.
"And they bought that?" Sam asked, surprised.
"Not exactly." Dakota sighed. "It took a lot of convincing and even then they were still skeptical. I had to kind of send them fake letters from Amber to get them to calm down. No return address, of course."
"Huh." Sam and I both said at the same time, admiring the girl's genius.
"Where's Arya, by the way?" I asked, changing the subject. We hadn't seen much of the girls since the incident. We all kind of decided what was best for everyone. Dakota left Amber with us because she knew we could keep her safe, and we went our separate ways. Dakota felt she was no use to us with Amber in the condition she was in, so she went back to Stanford for school. We never really found out what Arya was planning to do.
"She moved after everything happened. Said she needed a break from all of this, possibly forever. She didn't expect it to be like this... none of us did." She looked sad, nostalgic.
"Well, hey, it ain't all rainbows and butterflies, but it does have its perks." I tried to comfort her.
"Like what?"
"I--" I actually didn't know what to say. Dakota watched me fumble for a few seconds, cocking an eyebrow as if to say 'thats what I thought.' I glanced at Sam for help who, thankfully changed the subject back to Arya. "Did she say where she was going?"
"She works at Google now." She paused to revel at our gawking faces. Google?! Damn, I knew that girl was smart but that's like having an IQ of 1,000... if IQ's even go that high.
"I know right. She was surprised too." She added in response to our reactions. "She's dating someone now too, I think."
"Well, damn, Arya. Get you some." Sam gave me that sidelong glance like 'really, Dean?'
"What?" I shrugged. I was proud of my little prodigy.
"So things must be pretty lonely around here, hub?" Sam asked, sympathy clear on his face.
"Yeah, but Phil's been keeping me company." She was staring at the ground, then looked up at Sam, and quickly looked away. Sam had that look on his face like he'd done someone wrong and he knew it. I'd know. I see that face all the time. When I look at him, and when I look in the mirror.
Just then, perfect timing, Cas appeared.
"Any luck finding Amber?" I asked. Stupid of me, really. That's what he was here to answer in the first place.
"None." He answered, frustrated.
"Maybe you should try that angel radio thing?" Dakota suggested. "Get her to come to you?"
Cas thought for a moment. "Good idea." Then he was gone again. We all glanced at each other. "Brief visit." I said.
"Well, I guess we won't be seeing much of him now." Sam observed.
"As long as he finds my sister." Dakota was okay with it.
Then there was a being in a familiar red hoodie pushing through the front door. Phil.
"Hey, I tried to get here as fast as I could - hey, guys -" Phil looked to us, we nodded in response, then he looked back to Dakota, "Cas filled me in on everything. Dakota, this is awful."
The two hugged each other affectionately, Phil rubbed Dakota's back as she buried her face in his neck. I noticed Sam get all fidgety, and he had that look on his face. The fact that Phil and Dakota sat so close to each other after the hug made him even more uncomfortable.
I had to save my brother.
"Drinks. We need drinks."
