Welcome, this is a story that started as a school project and I never finished it. Hopefully now I will have that opportunity. Please enjoy.
My breath showed in front of me as I panted. I fought back exhaustion and forced myself to keep running. I wasn't sure what I was running from, but I knew I had to keep running. I turned into an alleyway, at the end there was a street light. My foot caught on something and I stumbled. I caught myself, my foot splashing water from a puddle on the concrete. The cold water chilled my leg as it soaked through my jeans.
The light at the end of the alley was blocked. Squinting, I saw it was a very large black dog. My breath caught as it's glowing red eyes locked on me running towards it. I slowed and stopped a few feet away. It lowered its head and growled, but it didn't seem to be looking at me. It's feral growls sent shivers of fear down my spine. I slowly put my hands up and started to back up.
The sound of a can echoed in the alley as one of my feet kicked it. I jumped, startled, at the sudden noise. Losing my footing on the slick ground, I felt my self go down, backwards. A sick crack followed as my head hit the hard ground. My vision blurred and I heard multiple sets of footsteps running towards me. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw the dog run towards me snarling. Then my world went black.
My head was throbbing in pain. There was a slow robotic beep to my left. I was aware I was on my back. I groaned slightly making my head vibrate. Seering pain soared through my skull.
"Persephone?" A calm, gentle voice spoke softly. Her voice laced with worry made my head throb as I tried to figure out who it was.
"Persephone, honey, can you hear me?"
"Yes", I tried to say, but I was stuck. No words came out.
"It's okay baby, you're okay. Take your time. Just come back to me okay? Make sure you come back," Then everything drowned out.
It felt like I was swimming in tar. My movements were slow and everything was black. I couldn't breathe, everything went still.
I heard a long beep in the distance, and someone screaming at me but I couldn't make out the words. The screaming got closer and there were so many noises. People yelling, screaming, the loud beep. It kept getting louder and louder.
Until, it all stopped.
I felt like I was floating. There was nothing to hold me down. No saddness, only warm content. When a bright light appeared in my vision. It continued to grow until it was blinding. Suddenly warm arms wrapped themselves around my waist.
"Go back. Persephone, you need to go back. Look for me, wait for me. I will come for you. But you need to go back," A warm, deep, husky voice said in my ear. I nodded mutely,
"Go now, and remember, I will find you. I love you. Safe travels".
I opened my eyes in what felt like slow motion. Bright, fluorescent lights burned my eyes. Blurry faces were in front of me, they were talking, but there was no sound. I saw a glint of metal coming towards me. Then I heard it. A slow, rhythmic beep. It was like a heartbeat. It was my heartbeat. I sighed in content, and blacked out, my heartbeat in my ears.
