I woke up in tears. I had a terrible nightmare. Today was reaping day. It was my second year. I looked at the clock on my bedside table. 5:48. I tried to go back to sleep but I just couldn't. I lay there in bed, wondering what could happen.
"You're only thirteen, Annie," I reassured myself, "You don't even apply for tesserae."
My sister, Amber, she's the one I should be worried about. She took the tesserae this year and she's sixteen and... Everything could go wrong.I woke up, disoriented. I hadn't realized that I had dozed off. It was 8:07. I got up from my bed- (oh how comfortable it was. It could just be my last time in it)- I brushed my bed head and I put it in two braids. I put on a comfortable pair of jeans and a tee shirt and went down to my father's shop. I liked going to his shop, making bracelets and necklaces and anything really. I was exceptionally great at making knots so I helped fix the fishing nets sometimes, too. I loved my dad. He was always there. He raised me and my sister while my mother was there but not really there. I never understood why she never cared about me, why she hit me for small things that my father would find cute. I was just a child, after all. When she hit me and I went crying to Amber, she always comforted me. She held me in her arms and sang to me, but when I asked her why our mother was like that, she told me that I shouldn't think about it. That it was just how she was. Then, she took me to the beach to play. I never learnt how to swim. I knew how to keep afloat but nothing more, which was strange, coming from the fishing district and not being able to swim. Once, on the beach there was a boy. I saw him sitting on the sand with his salty, bronze hair, looking out into the infinite ocean which surely had to end somewhere, but where I did not know. I ran up to him.
"Hello!"I said, perhaps a little too excited
"Hey," he said, looking up to me with his bright, sea-green eyes.
"I'm um, Annie." I stuttered. I didn't really have that much friends so it was a bit weird talking to someone other than Amber.
"Finnick." He acknowledged. "So... Annie, I feel like. Know you from somewhere. Yes! At Cresta's Bait and Fishing Equipment."
"Yeah", I blushed," I'm Annie Cresta. I stay by my dad's shop sometimes making bracelets and stuff."
"Cool", I have to go prepare the ropes, my dad's coming back. He's a fisherman, you know." He said proudly.
"Bye, Finnick"
"Bye, Anne"
I went back to Amber with a huge smile on my face and cheeks as red as a poppy, but I couldn't help it.
"When d'you start talking to strangers?" She joked
I shrugged "I even got a nickname. From now on call me Anne" I laughed.
She ran her hand through my messy hair.
"Let's go home, take a shower" she suggested and we went. And that's the story of how I met Finnick.
My best or better yet only friend. It was rough at first. We didn't get along so well but it turns out we're both pretty good at making inappropriate jokes at the wrong times and using dark humor. I heard the door chime which meant someone opened the door. I looked up and saw him.
"Happy hunger games!" I exclaimed in a freakish Capitol accent. I really didn't mean to say it. It just escaped my mouth.
He laughed, "And may the odds be ever in your favor!"
"Hello Mr.Odair. My dad's getting the new trident you ordered. He'lol be here in a minute."
"Thank you, dear" he smiled.
That also a good thing. I used to be so shy, I'm still introverted but hanging out with Finnick had really gotten me out of my shell.
"And you!," I looked at him straight in the eyes. "Don't tell me you've been fishing today!"
"I might have" he said and he sat next to me. "What are you doing?"
"I'm making this bracelet. You helped me get these shells, remember?" I said gesturing towards the bag of beautiful seashells.
"I do, I do" he nodded.
"Hunny, it's 11:00. You should go get dressed." Said my father.
"Oh yeah. Bye Finn!"
"Bye!" He waved.I walked back home and went up to my room. I let down my hair which, because of the braids and the humidity looked big and curly. I put on a blue dress and silver shoes. My sister, Amber was wearing a beautiful coral dress with matching sandals. She looked absolutely flawless apart from a scar on her cheek caused by our mother. All the emotions overwhelmed me and suddenly I was crying in Amber's embrace. I wiped off my tears and decided to act strong, for my sister and we went to the reaping.
