We arrived at the reaping. It was warm outside but that wasn't the only reason I was sweating. I heart was beating out of my chest. My sister took me to the 13 year old section.
"I love you, okay? No matter what happens. It will be alright." She reassure me and herself.
"I love you too. And, anyway. If I don't get picked, it's not like I have a bunch of friends to cry about." I joked trying to relieve her stress.
She smiled and Kissed my forehead and then she left and I was all alone in a crowded place. Surrounded by strangers. All of them wishing they wouldn't be picked, which ultimately meant that someone else would have to be. Calpurnia Blossom got on stage. She had big blue hair and her skin was tinted an unnatural yellow. She was wearing a blue dress which matched her hair. It was too shiny for my preference. We watched the usual video of the dark days.
"And now, we will choose the tributes. May the odds be ever in your favor."
She walked over to the bowl full of names of the girls in the district. Some I have acquainted. My name is somewhere in that bowl, I think to myself.
She pulls up a slip of paper and I'm already on the verge of crying.
She opens the slip.
My heart beats faster and faster
"Sarah Maslow"
A strong girl from the seventeen year old female section. She was tall and muscular and she really had a chance to win. Only, her face was rather expressionless. No smirk to scare her opponents, no tears just a hint of anger.
"And now for the boys!" Smiled Calpurnia. She went over to the boys' reaping bowl. Fished out a slip of paper and in a clear, loud voice, amplified by the microphone said
