*Esme is pronounced: EZ-may*

**********

It's been some time since I have given up on finding my mate. When I was little my granny told me stories of how some wolves don't have one, unfortunately, that includes me. At first I was depressed, pissed and hurt, but now, I could care less. I can protect myself. I don't need a mate.

"Esme, wake up," my dad, Lance, yells from outside my room.

I groan as I throw my blankets off.

"Be out here in five minutes," he says before walking away.

Half asleep, I walk to my bathroom and brush my teeth then my hair, then putting my hair in a pony tail. I walk to my closet and put on a multi colored sports bra and a pair of knee length yoga pants. I finish by tying my shoes and head out to the courtyard outside the pack house.

"Finally," Evan says as I shut the door behind me.

"Shut up, I got done in five minutes, that's a personal best," I say punching his arm.

He rubs his arm, then faces me with his fists up.

"That's it, put them up girl."

I giggle and put my fists up and get into a stance. Evan strikes and I duck and roll to the side. He grins then comes at me. When he gets in front of me I strike by 'falling' to the ground and use my feet to trip him by tangling mine with his and turning. Evan falls to the ground and I get up laughing, fists still up.

"Put them up boy," I say mocking him.

He glares at me and gets up and high fives me.

"Stop getting so good, I can't beat you anymore," he says kind of pouty.

I shrug, "sorry no can do."

He rolls his eyes and I notice that the group is getting together and some guys are checking me out and cat calling me. My pack is full of perverted guys.

"Ignore them," Evan whispers, putting an arm around my shoulders.

"Or I could just beat their asses," I smirk back at him.

"Yeah that works too," he agrees.

"Alright everyone!" our trainer says. pair up and go through a head on attack.

Evan and I pair up and go throw the steps and demonstrate it. Evan is always my partner because he is my best friend. The two of us have been best friends since we were in diapers. He's also my partner because I'm the only girl in the training class. Since I don't have a mate, I feel the need to protect myself. It's just the way it is.

After an hour of training, Evan and I go on a walk and in the woods and talk. My dad and I are planning on running away from the pack soon because we know that Alpha Luca is responsible for the death of my mom.

"When are you guys," he looks around, "leaving?"

I shrug, "I'm not sure, dad told me to pack tonight, so I'm guessing soon."

Evan nods, "I wish you guys could stay."

I stop walking and hug Evan, "I wish I could too." Leaving Evan is going to be really hard because I can't remember a day without him. He has been with me through so much, my moms death, my brother running away....

He hugs me back, "Keep in touch."

"I promise."

********

"Hurry Esme!" Dad yell-whispers in my face, walking me.

"What? huh?" I ask still half asleep.

"Alpha is coming for us. We have to go!" he explains as he grabs his bags. I get out of bed and grab my bags, not bothering to put on shoes and run with my dad to the car in the woods. Once we get outside and determine that Alpha Luca is not here yet, we make a B line for the car. We quickly put our bags into the back seat and then get in. Dad begins to head off, away from the pack house. Away from Evan, away from mom.
