A/N This song was my motivation for this entire short. From now on, I'll be posting the song that inspired each one. Don't forget to listen to the song at least once, it'll make the whole experience richer.

Thank you to @whatnameisntjused for the request!

He's home

Brendan stared at his phone, struck dumb by the simple words' implications.

When?

His fingers glided slowly over the screen, taking the same path that they had hundreds of thousands of times before; and yet the word had a new, foreign meaning.

Last night, cops found him

Brendan didn't respond for several moments, processing the new information. He began to type a message before sighing and shaking his head, pressing the call button instead.

"Hey."

Alexis answered before the first ring died.

"He's really back?" Brendan's voice cracked with emotion.

Although he couldn't see his friend, he could picture the set line of her mouth and a slight nod as she said, "Yeah."

"Can ..."-he paused to clear his throat-"can I come see him?"

"I can guarantee that he doesn't want to see you."

Brendan was silent for a moment, then, "Yeah, I guess I deserve that."

"Well you certainly don't deserve anything more."

"I know," he hung his head.

Again, a quiet fell over the pair, then Alexis spoke again and Brendan could hear the sympathy in her voice, "I know that you're a different person now. It wasn't right but I know why you did what you did. Micah doesn't, you'll have to prove it to him."

Nodding, Brendan blew out a breath, "When can I see him?"

"This afternoon if you want."

"I do, I want to see him."

Brendan heard muffled talking, identifying a second voice as his friend's mom, Mrs. King's.

"Mom says you can come over at three."

He glanced at his watch. That was in a half hour.

"See you then. Thank you so much, Alexis."

"Wait, Brendan."

He put the phone back to his ear, "Yeah?"

"He's ... changed. He's not the guy who left two years ago anymore ... Just thought I should warn you."

Then there was a beep as she ended the call.

§

"Micah?"

"Piss off."

Alexis sighed, a pained expression briefly twisting her features, "There's someone here to see you."

"I said, piss o-" the door was yanked open and Micah abruptly shut up as he came face to face with none other than his worst nightmare.

Brendan Mercier had changed, just as Micah had, and yet in a completely different way. Brendan had grown into his looks, seeming more the man he was becoming than the boy he'd been. His mop of unruly, black hair was now short and tastefully styled, accentuating rather than taking away from his piercing blue eyes. He'd also obviously been working out, as evidenced by his arms and legs, which were now toned and defined. Even his facial features had, somehow, become sharper.
