The 2nd day:
Laura could hardly sleep that night thinking about what had happened. It played like a movie, again and again. She went over every detail of the crash until she could have a perfectly clear picture of what happened. She thought about Ross. She had to see him. What if she never sees him again... Would she have to break faction rules to see him? At this point she would do anything. It was about 3 in the morning when she had the idea. She would have to sneak out. But how? She got out of bed and looked out the window into an endless world of mysterious darkness. She could be risking everything right now, she didn't care. She creeped downstairs stalking the door as her prey. This was really happening. Nobody dared to go outside after curfew. The door squeaked open so loudly in was like thunder crackling through every bone in her body. But, finally the door was open. She looked out onto the flat, wet grass that she would soon step. The hospital was dangerously close to her house. So she wouldn't have to go very far to get there. But getting there wasn't the problem. It was getting in.
She ran at bullet speed to the hospital, dogging lights and wires. Why don't they want people out at night anyways? She saw a dark figure in a cloak try to approach her. She could quite make out who it was. But they were watching her. Hawk eyes following her like a dog follows its owner. But she just kept running. And as she ran, so did he. She was getting scared but she was almost at the hospital so she couldn't stop. She turned around to see if the guy was still there. He wasn't. She finally reached the hospital and realized how sore her legs were. But she didn't care. It was surprisingly easy to get inside. She walked in and nobody said a word. Their faint eyes were solemnly focused on the radiating light of the computer screen. She found Ross' room. She slowly pulled open the blue curtain to find his wounded body laying on the hospital bed. Hooked up to a bunch of wires and cords. But his heart was beating. A wave of relief washed over her. She ran over to him and started crying. "La--a-u--u--ra-ra"
He struggled to let out her name. Each syllable was a striking pain throughout his body. "Ross-" she could hardly speak through the tears. So she didn't speak, just cried. She sat next to him on the bed and placed her hand on his chest, now scarred extremely bad from the crash. It had been about 15 minutes before anyone spoke again. "La-a-u-" "yes, Ross" she didn't let him finish her name, she knew how much it hurt for him to speak. "Are y--o-ou ok--a-a-y?" He struggled to get out. "Ross, don't worry about me, I love you so much" she rubbed his shoulder repeatedly. "-Wh-at did I --do to dese-rve you?" Ross stammered out And began to tear up. All of a sudden it became easier for him to speak and the words flowed from him like a river. "La-ura, I treasure you and I can't be separated from you because you are my world. And if I am away from you I can't make sure that you will be safe, that you will be loved, Laura let's run away together. I can't leave you, I can't" his words lingered in the air making it hard to breathe. Laura tried to hold back her tears but It became extremely difficult. "Ross, you know there is no way out. We can't just run away" she hugged his scarred body for a while. Then, Ross pulled out a rusty Australian penny that was given to him by his mother as a child, before he was separated. "Laura, you are worth more than any amount of money." He placed the penny in her hand and clutched it in her fist. "This penny means everything to me, and so do you" Laura couldn't help it anymore, the tears just kept flowing. "I love you" were the last words said before she fell asleep besides him in the uncomfortable rock like hospital bed. But, for some reason it felt soft, and warm. It was love.
When she woke up, Ross was out of all the wires, all patched up, almost as good as new. Until she looked down. His leg was replaced with a metal pole-like probe. She didn't want to cry or make him feel bad so she simply said, "beautiful." They payed the hospital bill and by the time they left, it was 6:45 pm. As they were walking out Ross grabbed her hand and pulled her in, "you never finished your kiss from yesterday" he said. "Weirdo" Laura responded and let him pull her up close to him. They moved in perfect sync and this went on for a while. When finally they realized, they had to go. "Perfect" Ross said moving the hair away from Lauras face. She laughed. As they were walking out Laura noticed how hard it was for Ross to walk with his new "leg". This scar would have to follow him around for the rest of his life. This made an imprint on her heart that would stay there forever. As she was driving home, she said nothing. Ross knew it was bothering her so she spoke up. "Laura, I don't care if I have this leg for the rest of my life, it is a memory of you." She gave him a quick smile and focused on the road again.
When they got home Ross asked her, "can you sleep at my house tonight?" Laura hesitated but finally gave in. They went and layed down. Ross pulled her up against his almost bare body and Laura snuggled in. They slept soundly the entire night until...
