She sighed deeply, scrupulously observing her reflection in the mirror, stroking the scar with her fingertips. A small smile on her lips, she hastened to dress and to go back to class. Her gym class had got her very tired. She barely listened to the teacher. She unfolded a lock of hair. The bell rang to release all students. The day was finally over. She gathered her things, letting everybody else leave.

"Hi," a girl behind her said.

Joelle raised her eyebrows, bowing slightly.

"You're new, right?"

"Yes."

"Do you like it here?"

"That'll do," Joelle said, a little defensively. All schools are alike."

"Not ours," the girl replied. "You're going to like it here. You'll see!"

Believing the conversation was over, Joelle walked to the door. The girl caught up to continue the discussion. That I didn't expect it! Nor does the girl tending her hand to present herself.

"I'm Kendra," she said, smiling. "And you?"

"Joelle..."

"Will you go to the Halloween dance this Friday?"

The girl shook her head. The party was held two days later. That didn't leave her much time to find a nice outfit for the event! She replied that no, readjusting her bag on her shoulder. Kendra was far from accepting her answer. Joelle was very surprised.

"I don't know anyone, anyway."

"Wrong: you know me!"

"Barely. And I don't even have a costume."

"That can be arranged. Come on! It's going to be awesome!"

"Well... I'll think about it..."

"It is settle: you're coming with us! Halloween is my favorite holiday. Pretending to be someone else for a few hours."

"It's fun, indeed."

Kendra took her hand for her to follow. She wanted to introduce her to her friends. Hopefully my headaches will not come back...
