A base is a substance that reacts with an acid to form a neutralization reaction producing a salt and water.
The main steps involved in making a soluble salt using an insoluble base:
1) Add the base to the solute, until no more reacts.
2) Warm the mixture, using a Bunsen, to speed up the reaction.
3) Filter off the unreacted solid.
4) Leave to cool. This is called crystallization. If the solution cools slowly, big crystals are made, whereas if the solution cools quickly, small crystals are created.
5) Filter off the crystals and leave to dry on filter paper.
