I've never had a friend that wasn't fazed by my baggage until I started group. It's easier to find friend when they have their own issues. Whether it's something mental like mine or an eating disorder we can't judge each other because we all have something that keeps us from being normal.
After being in group for a few weeks I finally told them why I am there. At first no one made eye contact with me. After a few awkward minutes James reached over and squeezed my arm in a reassuring way. When we were done with group sharing I went to the bathroom to cry. A few seconds later Amber came in and saw me sitting there and sat down next to me.
"Are you okay?"
"No... and if you are just going to make fun of me or something like that please just get it over with and leave me alone."
"Sara I'm not going to make fun of you."
"Then why are you here?"
"Because I know how hard it is to share something like that."
"I doubt that! You're perfect! Everyone likes you!"
"Not everyone..."
"What do you mean?"
"I don't like myself."
"That doesn't really count."
"It does to me... do you know why I'm in group?"
"No."
"I'm anorexic and a few weeks ago I hated myself so much that I tried to kill myself..."
"I had no clue that you were going through something like that."
"Yeah, but that is enough about me we should get back before Mr. Henderson sends out a search team."
When we got back to the room we went back to our separate groups. When I got back to mine and James table I notice that he was reading my journal.
"WHAT ARE YOU DOING?"
"You left it open when you went to the bathroom... I couldn't help myself... I'm sorry..."
"You should be! I told you that I don't like people reading what I write!"
"I only read a little and when it started getting really personal I stopped... I've really only been reading one over and over again."
"Which one?"
"The one about your first day at group and how you were relieved that I ask if you wanted to work with me."
"Oh..."
"You are really good. Good enough that you could turn something into the school newspaper."
"If you say so."
