Dear Elena,
Lilah asked me why I wasn't married.
We were eating cereal and watching cartoons
(I was, at least. She was coloring)
And her eyes met mine with this big smile,
And she asked why I don't have a ring on my finger
Like her friend's parents from daycare.
I told her I did, once.
She asked who it was, if he was a nice guy.
"She wasn't a guy," I whispered.
She was confused.
She said that it was weird.
It was mommies and daddies, not mommies and mommies.
"That's what your grandma said," I told her.
She nodded.
"Grandma's always right."
Love, Ida
