CHAPTER 1
THE QUIRKY FIRST FACE OFF

June 2007

"Ouch!" I shrieked when the ball hit my face hard.

The football that had been perpetually drenched in mud, left its imprint on my left cheek. My eyes gave birth to little water droplets because of the pain and my spectacle now hung down the right ear. Within no time, my face adorned a pinkish red colour and the left cheek now developed an inflammation.

Apart from the non spectacled vision that gave me a hazy view, the pain caused my vision to blur out too. For a second or two, I failed to understand what had just happened. As I saw the football bouncing back to the floor, I regained the clarity in my vision as well as the control over my senses.

I was one of those girls who would utilise the Physical Training sessions, Sports lectures or Free lectures to complete home assignments in the class itself.
Being the girl that I was, completing home assignments in school and enjoying the tiny bit of that superfluous time at home, to read a novel or paint a picture gave me immense joy. But that fortunate or unfortunate day some girls forcefully dragged me to the playground inspite of me being unwilling to play the sport. In all our physical training sessions, the girls occupied one-quarter of the ground to either play a game of handball or volleyball and the boys played their football match on the rest of the three-quarter of the ground.
It was not the first time I played handball and hence wasn't bad at it, but it was definitely one of those rare days when I was on the school ground.
And could I ask for a better encounter than a football hitting my face? Inspite of not wanting to get into any more anguish, I was already into some more.
Yes, that wasn't an end to what was in store for me on that day.

The ball that had just beautified the left half of my face was an outcome of either a 'non-aimed' or may be a 'perfectly aimed' kick by none other than the cheesily popular 'Mr.Cool Footballer' of our very own class.
I call it 'non-aimed' in the game of football because I was nowhere in the direction of the ball making a goal. And I call it 'perfectly aimed' because being the fabulous footballer that he was he couldn't have possibly aimed at making a 'goal' by kicking the ball in such an awful direction. So, for that kick, may be I was the 'goal' itself.

One doesn't know;
Actually one never knows;
And sometimes its better one doesn't know what goes on in a guy's mind.

It was just the beginning of the academic year of our sixth grade and not everybody knew each other.
The few that knew me, knew me because I had stood first in the fifth grade and had performed exceptionally well in the academics, like every other year.

The many that knew him, knew him because he was an acclaimed sport's guy, the prospective captain of the high school football team, a crowd pleaser in all the cultural events and annual days and if nothing else worked in his favour then he was just in vogue!
He dint have to woo girls hovering around him because they were already crushing over him. But that didn't stop him from magnetizing damsels. Unintentionally though, he kept impressing girls by his witty talks, football tricks and of course the inimitable and unmatched sense of humour!

Coming back to 'the football kick that almost changed our lives', with all the girls in his pockets I couldn't even think of arguing with the girls. They would either blame me or tag me as a spoil-sport. So, with all the rage in me I went straight upto him to intimate him about the big blunder that he had just made.

"Are you crazy? Do you even realise, whaa..."

"No I don't! Infact nobody even realised that even you were on the ground today!", he replied instantly.

"Whaaat? I don't understand how can someone be so insensitive!",
I said, with a lot of disgust in my tone!

"And I don't understand how can someone be so nerdy!",
he uttered and proved his insensitivity completely!

YES ,THAT WAS OUR FIRST MEET!
Desirable?
-Nah
Quirky?
-May be.

Being brought up in a country like India, where every teen girl imagines the first look of her chocolate boy to be the most charismatic moment of her life, I probably had the worst one! While the rest of the girls were desperate for him to return them a smile, I felt like slapping him right across his face. Little did I know, it'll be the same face that would bring all the happiness in my life for the next several years.
