We all love fanfiction. It's a fact of life. Some openly love it, for others it's a guilty pleasure. But it's always there! Since the dawn of time... (ok, ok, maybe not that early) people have always made up extra stories using their favourite characters. Up until recently though, if you mentioned fanfiction or shipping you might as well have been a nudist it was so strange (sorry nudists!). So when did it become so mainstream?
I'm being serious though, if you don't know what the heck I'm talking about, RUN, RUN AND NEVER GET INVOLVED IN THIS!
Right now that's done. So it is impossible to say you hate fanfiction. Because everybody is a fan of something, be it a band, celebrity or a TV show. No matter how many bad fanfictions there are of something there is always a good one. But believe me, you have to look hard.
Being a fanfiction writer myself, I suppose I am a little biased, but honestly, even I'll admit that there are some things really, really bad about the fanfiction community. First lets talk about the two thirds of wattpad that is.... one direction fanfics. *sighs*
(I would just like to say how much it pained me to research this. Those bad fanfics were really bad.)
As far as I can tell there are 3 main types of 1D fanfiction. Be warned, all of them are very cliche.
1. Adopted by one direction. There are now around a thousand fanfictions with that name. You could at least come up with a original name people! There are several things wrong with these. You can't just turn up at an orphanage and say I want that kid. You have to spend time filling in forms and ACTUALLY GETTING TO KNOW THE KID! You don't just walk in and go: "meh, she's ok, we'll take her!" No. This is how every single adopted by one direction story goes: a band adopted me and took me home. I poured out my story that I swore I'd never tell anyone to them after three days. They made me eat although I'm depressed and anorexic. I found out I'm a publicity stunt and ran away. They found me hurt and Louis placed me on his hip and took me home. Somehow they carried me like a baby though I'm like, 14.
PLEASE SAY YOU GUYS CAN RELATE TO THIS! PLEASE SAY YOU HATE IT TOO!
2. 1D's sex slave. Whoa whoa whoa! You think these REAL PEOPLE will enjoy you writing about how they're raping a girl? Oh yeah. They'll really love that! Sure, my fanfic is about Charlie McDonnell a real ( also very cool) person. But the Charlie in my story is BASED on the real Charlie McDonnell. And in my fanfiction, there is no sexiness going on! Back to the 1D fanfiction... What?!?!?! Why? No offence but its kinda, oh, I don't know... CREEPY?!
3. And then the ones where they're just a story. Girl meets 1D member, blah blah blah. This category is where you'll find the most half-decent fanfiction. (If there is any...)
So, next thing. Real person fanfiction. I don't have a problem if its an innocent story where the most sexual it's going to get is kissing and hugging. (Which is all my fanfiction is.) But like Cherimon, sorry if it's your OTP, but they're both straight, and they're friends. Don't you think it might make them just a little upset? I don't have a problem with gays, I like everyone but please, they're not gay, don't make it hard on their friendship.
But hey, the Internet is a great place for sharing opinions and you can do what you want on there! Just saying though, when did us Internet users become such a bunch of weirdos?
And yes, I do realise I've just offended half the people on wattpad without meaning to, and yes I know there's going to be a proper war down in the comments now. But hey, it'll be funny to read and I'm British and complaining is what we do best.
Also, if you've been living under a rock for the last 5 years you won't know what I'm talking about. So here's a little dictionary for you:
Fanfiction: a story written by fans based on people or characters from another story or film.
Shipping: when you like the idea of two people or characters being in a relationship. It doesn't have to be sexual- but this is the Internet, who are we kidding?
OTP: One True Pairing, which is basically the ship you like the most. Don't insult someone's OTP. If they kill you it's your fault.
