Chapter 2
Unknown POVI wake up feeling dazed and confused. My memory seems lost, ever thing I ever was I cant remember... Not even my name. I suddenly feel myself moving in an upward motion. Red light flashes as I rise higher and higher. I attempt to stand up, though its no use. My body feels limp and sore. I crawl on my hands and knees to find a door or something that I could use to get out of the small dark room. The room keeps rising, when suddenly it comes to a stop, throwing me across the metal ground. The top opens up and I'm nearly blinded by light.
"Hello Newbie!" A girl with short brown hair says as she throws a rope down to me. Hesitantly, I climb the rope and see about 40 girls staring at me. The world behind them, all I can see are large stone walls. I don't know what to do. Feeling confused and pressured, I make a run for it. I keep running, I come to a cluster of woods and run though them. Low hanging tree branches hit my face as run by. I don't see a root on the ground and tripping over it, I go tumbling down.
After about what seems like forever of laying on the ground, I spot a girl. She slowly walks up to me holding out her arms in front herself. "Hey, it's okay I'm not going to hurt you." She assures me. She has long brown hair that was braided into two french braids.
"Where am I?" I ask. "Why can't I remember anything? Why am I here?" I keep asking questions and she doesn't seem to want to answer me. "Well?"
"Here come with me" she holds out her hand. "I'm Valerie. The leader of this place." I hesitate at first, but reach for her hand.
"I'm..." I start but remember I don't even know my own name.
"It's okay, you'll get your name back soon." She tells me.
We made our way out of the woods, which seemed close to death, and Valerie takes me on a tour of what they call The Square. The place is huge. There are four stone walls that are massive, hence the name The Square I guess. In the middle of each wall was a big opening. There were many diferent areas in The Square, one being a big building which they called The Homestead. There was also a kitchen area outside and a place to eat. Over on the other side of the large square lawn is a farm. There are many different animals like pigs, cows, goats and chickens. But there was also a place that worried me, a jail they called The Slammer. Why would they need a jail? Even if it was basically a hole in the ground with a roof and barred walls and doors.
Valerie explains to me what the other girls do around here and what job I may or may not have. I'm hoping for something that will get me out of this place or at least away from these people. "You'll begin you training for possible jobs tomorrow."
"What's that?" I ask pointing to one of the large gaps in the stone walls I noticed earlier.
"Oh that..." She dragged off. "That's The Maze." Valerie says. My eyes widen.
"The what now?" I ask. Walking towards the opening.
"I wouldn't go in there if I were you!" I stop in my tracks. "The Maze. That's what keeps us in this place. One of the worst things you could do is go in there. Do you understand?" Valerie barks. I nod and walk grudgingly away from the Maze and her.
I find myself back where I started, at the edge of the woods. I sat there for a long time just watching people buzz around what Valerie had called The Square. Its was like a well-oiled machine, everyone had their job and that was what made the place run. It was hard for me to really see The Square fully so I decided to get as better vantage point, in a tree. This seemed to come naturally to me and I felt at home and safe up high where I could see everything going on. As I sit up there I can see a small red light further up in the tree. Wondering what it was I climb up higher to look at it. It moves fast away from me but I catch a glimpse of a strange little creature. Like a lizard almost only it was metal? All the things in this place seem strange and I'm very curious. But I was definitely most curious about The Maze. Why had she told me not to go in there? Its not fair. And what wasn't she telling me?
***It was now beginning to become sundown. I haven't talked to anyone all day except Valerie. I stayed in my own little corner, away. I look in the direction of The Maze, curious. I look closer and see two girls run out of it. I stand up on my branch and watch them. "What the heck Valerie!?"
Jumping down from my tree, I jog over to Valerie and tap her on the shoulder. "They were just in The Maze!" I whisper in her ear."That's okay. They're Runners. Runners are the only ones aloud to go inside The Maze. It's there job to find a way out, a way home." She tells me. I feel a weird twang in my stomach and a compelling feeling washes over me. I want to become a Runner, I need to be.
"How do I become a Runner?" I ask.
"I'm sorry to break it to you, but we don't usually accept people to become Runners. Especially newbies." She tells me.
"I want to be a Runner!" I snap. "You can't just say no you got to see what I got!"
"Okay, we'll talk tomorrow. Let's get your name, and then we'll talk." She says. "Now get some sleep, our old Newbie, Meg, has set up a hammock for you. Now go." She says.
I roam around until I find where my hammock was, I moan and jump into it. I can't help but think about becoming a Runner. Something in my blood wants me to become a Runner. I think about it for awhile, but my thoughts were inturupted when a deafening boom rang across The Square. Panicking I sit upright and look around. No one else seemed to be fazed by the sudden noise. I look around, I can hear a grinding noise and search for its source. The openings in the wall, they were doors. Closing doors.
I hop out of my hammock to get a closer look. Sure enough, they were closing, massive stone walls defying the laws of nature. Amazed and a little scared and confused I watch until they slam shut, cutting off any noise of before. Not wanting to go back to a crowed sleeping area I slink off back to the woods and tuck myself away in a cluster of trees by the wall, which was covered in ivy and vines. I listen to the sounds of The Square when I finally fall asleep...
***
Emily.
Emily. I sit up fast in my corner remembering my name. Emily. I crawl out from under a blanket. A blanket? I never brought a blanket with me... Someone was playing Mother. I was feeling satisfied and excited about remembering my name and I find Valerie talking to the two girls I saw run out of The Maze last night by The Crate. I run over and slightly wave to them."Hey this must the new newbie!" One of them says. She has super curly, frizzy black hair. She snickers and nudges the other girl in the ribs.
"Hi I'm T." The other one says. She has dirty blond hair and dark brown eyes.
"T?" I ask.
"Yea just T" says Valerie. "We have this theory were she still can't remember her full name!"
"It's pretty stupid!" Says the frizzy haired girl. "I'm Lexi." I nod and wave feeling the slightest bit awkward.
"We better get going!" T smiles and waves. The two of them stand up and grab small packs off the ground, throwing them over their shoulders. They jog away and I watch them take off into the Maze through one of the massive doors. They must be The Runners.
"I remember my name." I tell Valerie, excitedly.
"Oh yeah, and what's that?" She asks me.
"Emily. But call me Em." I grin.
"Well Em, welcome to The Square." She says. "Now l-" she starts but gets cut of by a loud alarm. "What the hell?"
"What?!" I ask, surprised.
"The Crate. It's not supposed to come up until next month." She says turning to were I came up from the crate. Everyone else comes running over and they gather around it. The alarm stops and two girls open up the top. When they do Valerie jumps down. I try to push my self to the front to get a better view. I look down and see a body laying on the ground.
"It's a boy!" She exclaims.
