Chapter Three
Valerie's POV
"It's a boy," I say. What? What the hell is this?!"Emily! Em, where are you?" This new boy gasps sitting up suddenly. That little shit must have something to do about this.
"Emily! Get over here now!" I shout. Our previous Newbie steps forward with a look of fear on her face. I was about to start interrogating her, to see if she recognized him in any way since he sure seemed to recognize her, when I noticed him start to fiddle with something in his hand. I looked closer and saw him holding a piece of paper. "Hand it over, Newbie." The boy hands the paper over looking both scared and confused.
He's the last one ever.
The crap is that supposed to mean? Are the creators really not going to send us anymore Newbies? A bunch of questions race through my head when suddenly Em starts freaking out.
"Get out! GET OUT OF MY HEAD!" She shouts and falls on the ground covering her ears. This girl has literally been here a day and has already gone crazy. This clearly has to do with this new Newbie. I don't know exactly what's going on, but I do know that it's not looking pretty.
"Julie, take Emily to the medshack!" I shout to the nurse who starts to help her up. "And you," I say pointing to the Newbie, "You're going in the jail until we figure out what the hell is going on." Two of the other girls grab the newest Newbie by his arms and start to pull him to the jail.
I was about to follow Julie and Em to the medshack when I notice someone running out of the maze. It's T and she's back way earlier than she should be. I quickly jog over to her when she suddenly falls flat on the ground.
"T! Are you okay? What's going on? Why are you back so early?" I throw a bunch of questions at the Runner, but she won't answer me.
Breathing heavily, T looks me in the eyes and says, "I need water dumb ass." Nodding my head I sprint off towards the kitchen to get her a new bottle of water. Here's the thing, T is my best friend and she's the only one who can talk to me like that, without getting the crap beat out of her.
"Here," I hand T the water bottle when I get back to her. "Now tell me what happened! Did you find a way out?!"
"I found a dead one."
"A dead what?"
"Greiver."
"You're shitting me, right? There's no way that you found a dead Greiver," T just nods to me, indicating that she's not lying. I think fast on what to do about this situation, deciding that there's not much else that we can do. "As soon as you're back on your feet, we're going out there. We still have plenty of time until the doors close."
T only sends me a questioning look before nodding her head, agreeing to go back into the Maze.
~~~~~~~
Around half an hour later, T and I are at the Maze doors. We explained to all of the Keepers what we were doing. They were all hesitant on the idea, but didn't try to fight it. After leaving Brooke in charge, the two of us head out into the Maze.
Being in the maze was odd. I had been in there before, when I first came to the maze. I was in the first group of girls to get here. At that time it was natural for all of us to go and search for a way out. Eventually, I was put in charge of the glade, so I stopped going into the the Maze. T and I are now the only ones left from the original group.
T and I run for about an hour when she starts to slow down, I follow her lead. She comes to a complete stop and turns to me. "It's right around this corner."
We turn the corner and, low and behold, a Greiver is lying there on the ground. T was right, it definitely did look dead. Well, that was until it started moving.
"T, THAT THING ISN'T DEAD!"
"RUN!"
T and I run as fast as we can to get away from that motherfucker. Apparently, Grievers have suddenly gotten acting skills, because that one sure seemed to be dead, but clearly it isn't. T and I managed to out run that little piece of shit for what seemed like an eternity, but was probably only a half an hour, until I suddenly felt a tug on my shirt and I fell face first on the ground.
"VAL!" T shouts and I can feel myself being suddenly lifted into air. I feel one of the most excruciating pains that I've ever felt and I know that I've been stung. That's the last thing that I can remember clearly before everything becomes very disoriented and all I can feel is pain.
