Chapter 2: Kindness to Animals
Story1: The Thirsty Dog
One day, there was a man walking in the desert looking for water. After a while, he saw a well. He ran to it but unfortunately there was no water. The man leaned on the well and then suddenly he fell inside. When he reached down he saw some water he drank some and then left. As he continued to walk he saw a thirsty dog who was about to die, looking for water. He thought of carrying the dog to the well so he carried the dog and took him to the well. He could not take the dog inside the well, so he then entered the well, took off his shoe and put some water in it. He then gave the shoe to the dog for it to drink the water from.
The Prophet (S.A.W.) teaches us:
'For every living thing that we treat well there is Ajrun (reward)'
Story 2: The man and the ox
Early one morning, a man went to his farm with his ox. The ox pulled the plough the whole day working hard.
At sunset, the farmer and the ox were extremely tired. The farmer collected his farming tools and he rode the ox because he was worn out. But the ox was more tired than he was and it could not move.
The farmer got angry and he whipped the ox cruelly. The ox tried to get up and save itself from the beating but it fell down again and was unable to breath.
Suddenly the ox said: "We have not been created for this, we have been created for ploughing."
The farmer was shocked to hear the ox talking. One of the other farmers said,'The prophet (S.A.W) said: "Fear Allah in respect of these dumb animals and ride them when thay are fit to be ridden and get off them when they are tired."'
Story 3: The camel that cried
One day, there were two men who saw a camel entering the Prophet (S.A.W)'s house. The camel went infront of the Prophet (S.A.W).
"The camel is acting as if it wants something from the Prophet (S.A.W)" Said one of the man.
"Sub-hanAllah. The camel is weeping! Tears are falling from its eyes" Said the other man
"Yes, and the Prophet (S.A.W) is rubbing its neck with his hands" replied the first man.
The Prophet was listening to the camel! The camel was saying something.
The two men looked for the owner of the camel. The owner went into the Prophet (S.A.W)'s house and talked to the prophet. After a while, the owner and the camel left the Prophet (S.A.W)'s house.
The two men ran to the owner and asked him what the prophet (S.A.W) had told him.
The owner replied: " The Prophet (S.A.W) said that the camel was complaining that I give it little food and too much work. The Prophet asked me to be kind to the animal."
"And what will you do?" The two men asked
"I will do what the Prophet asked me to do" The owner replied
Islam teaches us to be kind, not only to people but also to animals!
